Remembering Sathyan Master on his 109th birth anniversary

November 9, 1912, is the day when a star was born! To be precise, Cheruvilakathu Veettil Manuel Sathyaneshan Nadar graced the earth for the first time. Keralites know him as Sathyan, whom they affectionately referred to as their ‘Sathyan Master’. An extraordinaire on and off the screen. Today marks the 109th birth anniversary of the legendary actor. On this special day, let’s take a look at his luminous life on and off the silver screen.

Excellence in academics

Cheruvilakathu Veettil Manuel Sathyaneshan Nadar was born in a Christian family in Thiruvananthapuram. He was a keen student and was always fascinated by the world of academics. After excelling in school, Sathyan cleared the Vidwan exam (similar to MA) and took the job as a professor.

Man of many hats

Sathyan was someone who believed in exploring his talent. And that led the college professor to take the clerical post at the Kerala Secretariat. He worked for over a year then and in 1941 Sathyan joined the British Indian Army. After completing his term in the army he returned to Kerala and joined in Police service. Sathyan wasn’t the jack of all trades, but also the master of all. He had an extraordinary talent to excel in all the fields he chose!

Debuting into movies

Sathyan Master was a pioneer in many aspects. He was never afraid of taking risks, nor did he fear challenges. He followed his heart and went where it took to. While working with the police, Sathyan used to participate in amateur plays and his first film was released in 1952. Sathyan went on to shoulder Malayalam cinema and worked with some of the prominent filmmakers of the time including K. S. Sethumadhavan, P. Venu, A. Vincent. He developed a unique style of acting and became one of the superstars along with his contemporary Prem Nazir.

Pioneer

Sathyan was a pioneer in all its true sense. Be it his more realistic acting style or setting a new benchmark in the history of Malayalam cinema with the neo-realistic film ‘Neelakuyil’, which bagged the National award for the best feature film in Malayalam or bagging the first-ever state award for Best Actor, Sathyan was a path-breaking talent.

A warm-hearted personality

Sathyan was a thorough gentleman. He was considered the superstar after Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair. Sathyan Master conquered hearts for both his on-screen and off-screen life. His hard work and humility speak volumes even after decades of his passing away. Sathyan Master passed away in 1971 at the age of 58, but he lives on in the hearts of every Malayalam movie buff through the volume of work he has delivered.
