Mohanlal special: Times when the ‘Complete actor’s films ruled the box office

May 21, 1960, marks the birthdate of one of the most versatile actors in the Malayalam film industry, Mohanlal, who is also known by the label ‘Marlon Brando of Mollywood’. Along with playing several memorable characters, the legendary actor has also cemented his place as one of the actors who had the largest number of box office hits. Today, as Mohanlal is turning a year older, let's take a look at the highest grossing films of the actor.

Mohanlal starrer ‘Pulimurugan’ was the first Mollywood film that entered the Rs 100 crore club at the Kerala box office. The Vysakh’s directorial action thriller could be said as the film that made the Malayali audience understand that the Malayalam movies too can create wonders at the box office. The film was received well by the audience due to the terrific performance of Mohanlal and the magnificent use of VFX coupled with stunning action sequences.

Jeethu Joseph’s directorial film ‘Drishyam’ proved that it doesn’t always require huge marketing tactics or magnificent visual effects to pave the way for a film to earn huge numbers at the box office. The Mohanlal starrer reportedly earned Rs 60 crores at the Kerala box office and caught nationwide attention from all the film buffs as it was remade in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, and even Mandarin Chinese.

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s directorial debut ‘Lucifer’ not only gave the much-needed boost to Mohanlal’s stardom but also cast its magical spell over the box office numbers. The action drama film reportedly grossed Rs 200 crores at the box office and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year 2019.

The Malayalam film ‘Odiyan’ had one of the best marketing strategies which have indeed helped the film to earn big at the box office despite getting mixed opinions from the audience. Sreekumar Menon’s directorial film reportedly earned Rs 98 crores worldwide and also became the highest first-day grosser during the year 2018 as it reportedly earned Rs 7.10 crores at the Kerala box office.

Priyadarshan’s suspense thriller ‘Oppam’ marked the director’s grand comeback to the realm of the hit-making films as the director faced a huge blow in the past years as most of his films gained mixed opinions from the viewers. The Mohanlal starrer received much adulation from the audience and reportedly earned Rs 65 crores at the Kerala box office.
