Mohanlal

Mohanlal famously entered films by chance, yet became one of India’s most natural performers. He can slide from comedy to heartbreak within a single scene without breaking the spell. Crew members talk about his effortless one take shots where he adds small improvisations that change the mood. From village boy to mythic hero, he makes each character feel like someone you might know in real life.

2/5

Bharat Gopy

Before films, he worked as a government clerk and theatre actor, yet Bharat Gopy went on to win the National Award for Kodiyettam. Directors loved how he treated every role like a lived biography. No vanity, only truth. Even when he barely spoke, his eyes carried anger, hurt and deep hope together, turning ordinary middle-class men into unforgettable portraits of quiet rebellion and dignity forever.

3/5

Mammootty

Mammootty studied law and practised before cinema claimed him, and you can sense that sharp, analytical mind in every performance. Three-time National Award winner, he shifts from stern patriarch to vulnerable dreamer with tiny changes in gaze and tone. Off-screen he is known for philanthropy and love for reading, which perhaps explains the depth, discipline and softness he brings to even the most towering characters.

4/5

Murali

Murali was a college lecturer and theatre activist before Malayalam cinema discovered his intensity. He won the National Award for Neythukaran, playing an ageing party worker with heartbreaking honesty. There is a lived in tiredness in his body language, as though his characters have walked miles before reaching the frame. That mix of roughness and tenderness made his brief appearances feel like chapters from a larger novel.

5/5

Thilakan

Rooted in theatre, Thilakan brought a commanding energy that made every co-actor raise their game. He treated supporting roles with the seriousness of a lead, building histories for even a few scene characters. National Award-winning performances aside, fans remember his unforgettable father figures as equal parts terrifying and loving. Between sarcasm and sudden tears, he showed how complicated ordinary people can be within a single frame.
