South diva Kaniha is celebrating her birthday today. From accidentally stepping into modeling to later venturing into movies and making a strong presence in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam movies, Kaniha has come a long way. In her career spanning nearly two decades, she has worked with some of the most acclaimed filmmakers and A-lister stars.

She is a mechanical engineering graduate
Kaniha was born into a family of engineers and pursuing the academic path was very important to her. She was good at studies and was also the topper during the higher secondary schooling. Following that Kaniha joined engineering at the Birla institute in Rajasthan. She is a mechanical engineering graduate.

She is an ‘accidental’ beauty pageant
Stepping into showbiz wasn’t something that Kaniha dreamed of. The diva apparently went to sing at the Miss Chennai 2001, but like they say, you never know when the opportunity is going to knock on your door. A girl who was supposed to be participating in the pageant backed out at the last minute and the organizers were running frenzy to find a girl to replace her and they happened to see Kaniha. Although Kaniha was there to sing, they persuaded her as she was tall and gorgeous. Kaniha walked the ramp and guess what? She was crowned as Miss Chennai 2001!

She made her debut with Mani Ratnam
Kaniha landed the opportunity to begin her journey in cinema with Mani Ratnam. She marked her debut in movies with the 2002 Tamil release ‘Five Star’, which was produced by Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies! Kaniha later went on to conquer the South industry and has now emerged as a big name in the industry.

She is a talented dubbing artist
Kaniha is an exceptional actor. But did you know that she is also a great dubbing artist? Yes, she has dubbed for some of the biggest actresses in the South and you will be surprised to know whom! Kaniha first dubbed for Genelia D’souza in 2005 for the film ‘Sachein’. The same year she gave voice to Sadha for the film ‘Anniyan’. Well, the surprise doesn’t end there. Kaniha is the person who has dubbed for Shriya Saran for the blockbuster movie ‘Sivaji: The Boss’.

She is a playback singer
Singing was always Kaniha’s best forte. She has a very soothing voice and the actress has crooned songs for movies. Her first project as a singer was ‘Five Star’, her debut movie. She has also sung for many music albums including the latest ‘Margazhi Thingal’ helmed by Suhasini Mani Ratnam.
