HBD Jagathy Sreekumar: 5 characters of the veteran that we wish had a sequel

Jagathy Sreekumar has been away from showbiz for almost a decade, following the unfortunate accident in 2012. But that doesn’t mean, his name has faded from the minds of the movie buffs or Keralites. In memes to iconic dialogues one uses in day-to-day lives, Jagathy Sreekumar continues to conquer hearts with his illustrious work. The veteran actor will soon start filming for a film tentatively titled ‘CBI5’, which is the fifth installment of Mammootty’s iconic investigative thriller and all eyes are on the project. Jagathy Sreekumar is turning 71 today, and on this occasion, let’s take a look at some of his iconic characters, that we wish had a sequel to!

Nischal from ‘Kilukkam’

Okay, let’s confess, we Malayali’s eat, sleep, and breath cinema. And we use some of the one-liners and dialogues from movies in our day-to-day lives. And the iconic “Welcome to Ootty. How do you do,” delivered by Nischal (Jagathy Sreekumar) in the 1991 Priyadarshan’s directorial ‘Kilukkam’ has always in trend. In the film, Jagathy Sreekumar played the role of Nischal, a still photographer, who resides in the picturesque Ootty and makes a living by clicking pictures of tourists. Joji (Mohanlal) and Nischal’s friendship (if you can term it that!) still cheers up the viewers and Nischal is undeniably a character cinephiles wish to get a sequel!

Arassumoottil Appukuttan from ‘Yodha’

Mohanlal and Jagathy Sreekumar’s on-screen chemistry is worth mentioning and a movie that utilized their dynamics the most was the 1992 release ‘Yodha’. They played cousins - Thaipparambil Ashokan (Mohanlal) and Arassumoottil Appukuttan (Jagathy Sreekumar), who cannot stand eye to eye! Everything from the kabaddi to the chess game is a rivalry for them. Appukuttan played by Jagathy Sreekumar is a naive and witless young man, whose only goal in life is to defeat his cousin Ashokan at least once! Towards the end of the film, one can see that Appukkuttan is in Nepal, learned some martial arts, and is part of a pact! It would be interesting to see what would happen next as Appukkuttan never gets tired of failing to Ashokan!

Jayakrishnan Pillai from ‘Meleparambil Aanveedu’

If you are new to Malayalam cinema and haven’t watched the film yet, let us tell you please don’t get fooled by the name of the character! Jagathy Sreekumar played Jayakrishnan, the eldest son of Thiruvikraman Pillai (Narendra Prasad). Jayakrishnan has passed the ‘marriageable age’, however, hasn’t found the love of his life yet. Although he is in his 30s, he wants a younger bride and needless to say have superficial beauty notions for his bride-to-be. His failed attempts to woo the woman from his hometown and even the maid Pavizham (Shobana) never gets old, and one can blame the audience for wanting to see a sequel wherein Jagathy Sreekumar reprises Jayakrishnan.

Krishnavilasom Bhageerathan Pillai from ‘Meesha Madhavan’

Krishnavilasom Bhageerathan Pillai from Lal Jose’s directorial ‘Meesha Madhavan’ is probably one of the most loved characters of Jagathy Sreekumar. Pillai is a money lender and a penny-pincher, who hates Madhavan (Dileep) with life! His sarcastic interactions with Madhavan to his secret affair with Sarasu, a military man’s wife, Bhageerathan Pillai’s deeds have made the audience laugh their lungs out. One can often see the character in memes and political satire discussions, and we think it is one of Jagathy Sreekumar’s characters, which we can’t get enough of!

Vikram from Mammootty’s CBI franchise

Jagathy Sreekumar is a versatile actor. From comic roles to villain characters, he has played it all and one of his iconic characters is Vikram, the CBI officer from K. Madhu’s CBI franchise featuring Mammootty in the lead. Jagathy essayed a dutiful officer in the film and the role grabbed the eyeballs for all the right reasons. He appeared in all the four previous installments - ‘Oru CBI Diary Kurippu’ (1988), ‘Jagratha’ (1989), ‘Sethurama Iyer CBI’ (2004), and ‘Nerariyan CBI (2005)’ and the makers are currently filming the fifth! Interestingly, makers have confirmed that Jagathy Sreekumar will be reprising the role in the fifth, tentatively titled ‘CBI5’ and we can’t wait to watch the film on the big screens!
