Basil Joseph to Jude Anthany: Directors who transitioned from niche films to majestic blockbusters

In every film industry, there are several directors who are comfortable doing movies in certain genres or budgets, and on the flip side, there are several other filmmakers who suddenly break from their niche and pull off big-budget movies that turn out to be masterpieces. Here let’s take a look at some of the Malayalam movie directors who stunned audiences by breaking away from small-scale movies and executing movies mounted on a large scale flawlessly.

Jude Anthany Joseph

Until the arrival of the disaster drama movie ‘2018’, the actor-director Jude Anthany Joseph was always in his comfort zone by executing simple movies such as ‘Ohm Shaanthi Oshaana’, and ‘Saara’s. Jude Anthany has indeed placed his bar so high with the Tovino Thomas starrer ‘2018’ which turned out to be the fastest movie to enter the Rs 100 crore club.

Basil Joseph

Same as Jude Anthany Joseph, the actor-director Basil Joseph took a small path from small-scale films to the large-scale film ‘Minnal Murali’. Even though the Tovino Thomas starrer ‘Minnal Murali’ has comparatively less budget than other language movies that come under the superhero genre, the scale of the film was so high that the movie buffs were impressed with Basil Joseph pulling it off with expertise.

Rojin Thomas

Although the ‘Home’ director Rojin Thomas’ upcoming Jayasurya starrer ‘Kathanar: The Wild Sorcerer’ is still in the filming process, it is appreciable that the director is bringing in the new technology of virtual production through the movie. Virtual production technology is mostly used in Hollywood movies and series such as ‘The Mandalorian’, and ‘The Lion King’

Rosshan Andrrews

Rosshan Andrrews had already done a big-budget movie with the Mohanlal starrer ‘Casanovva’ which unfortunately flopped at the box office. After the failure, the ace director didn’t decide to give up and years later he executed the big budget film ‘Kayamkulam Kochunni’ starring Nivin Pauly in the lead and the film turned out to be one of the profitable ventures in Mollywood.
