5 Malayalam movies that cannot be remade in other languages

Whether it's the scarcity of ideas or the interesting storylines, what attracts filmmakers to remake some classic movies is a bigger question. But remakes have become a staple for the existence of many entertainment industries. However, some movies are best in their first copies and they hardly need any remake. Here's take a look at five Malayalam movies that cannot be remade in any other languages.

Thoovanathumbikal (1987)

No matter how brilliant a filmmaker or his crew is, one can never remake Malayalam cult classic ‘Thoovanathumbikal’, without losing its soul. It’s something only P Padmarajan could achieve. It is even impossible to visualize someone else playing Jayakrishnan (Mohanlal) and Clara (Sumalatha)! Also, no filmmaker dead or alive could place Clara in the best light as P Padmarajan did. And the movie doesn’t need a remake as it is crafted in the most flawless way ever.

Nadodikattu (1987)

Sathyan Anthikadu’s directorial ‘Nadodikattu’ is another movie that cannot ever be remade. The characters Dasan (Mohanlal) and Vijayan (Sreenivasan) are so unique that one cannot even imagine replacing them. Also, the movie is something that doesn’t work well in the present day scenario. Do we have actors who can slay Gafoorkka (Mamukkoya), Anandan Nambiar (Thilakan) or Pavanayi (Captain Raju) as effortlessly as the real ones?

Vaisali (1988)

In short, ‘Vaisali’ is a poignant movie, which came to reality only because filmmaker Bharathan, scenarist MT Vasudevan and cinematographer Madhu Ambat shook hands. The period drama is as artistic as a beautiful painting and the movie is so perfect even after three decades of its release. And let’s be real, do you think someone other than Suparna Anand and Sanjay Mitra could ace the role of Vaisali and Rishyashrungan respectively? The answer is no! It’s hard to make a magnificent piece of art like ‘Vaisali’.

Pavithram (1994)

T. K. Rajeev Kumar’s directorial ‘Pavithram’ is a tale about a brother, who had to sacrifice his own life to become the guardian of his little sister, who could be of his daughter’s age. Chettachan aka Unni played by Mohanlal still touches hearts for the character traits. Each and every character in the movie including Mohanlal, Thilakan, Srividya, KPAC Lalitha, and Innocent are irreplaceable. One could remake the movie if they find the substitution for these actors!

Kumbalangi Nights (2019)

‘Kumablangi Nights’ directed by Madhu C Narayanan is yet another movie, which cannot be remade in any other language. The movie is deeply rooted in the uniqueness of the place and their living conditions. Saji played by Sounin Shahir or the Psycho Shammi played by the talented Fahadh Faasil are so perfect that it cannot be ever reprised by any other actors.

Though I love all these movies, the article is meaningless. Everywhere it is said the author cannot imagine anyone else doing the role. But, these stories are still relevant and have a universal appeal. And can be remade for sure.
