Su Su Sudhi Valmeekam

Story: The film follows the life of Sudhi Vathmeekam, who is low on self-confidence due to the debilitating speech impediment of stutter. Sudhi’s efforts to overcome the handicap, the characters who inspire him and moreover, a troubled man’s quest to discover himself forms the crux of the movie.


Review: Right from the title, it’s evident that Su...Su...Sudhi Vathmeekam is the story of a man who has had difficulties in articulating words. One can see that it’s also about how we often tend to judge people solely by their outward personality. An instantly absorbing story, the movie is about the tussle between a stammering Sudhi and our society that easily mocks and sidelines him for his disability.

For Sudhi, stuttering has been a constant struggle psychologically, socially and even physically. Words stick in his throat, especially when he’s nervous. He takes medical help (on and off), but nothing seems to work and he is left sullen. Oddly enough, the only time he doesn’t stutter is when he sings. And fate take him to Kalyani, a speech therapist and what the future has in store for him forms the heart-warming narrative.

A well-paced, feel good movie with a believable story, Su...Su... has enough drama without dreariness, deeply-moving moments, humour and relatable characters. Though there are moments that make the protagonist an object of pity, the movie isn’t solely an effort to sentimentalize his predicament. It’s about the need for each of us to accept ourselves with all our shortcomings and fight our own battles.





Jayasurya, who has carved out a career in M-Town attempting unprecedented characters, brings to life a tormented Sudhi. He performs with theatrical gusto and his handling of a scene in which he is forced to say a few words to the camera is masterful. Sshivada is apt as the confident-yet-calm speech therapist Kalyani. Aju Varghese is impressive as the movie-minded friend and similarly, each character has some moments.

Our industry has a long list of entertainers, romantic escapades and no-brainers. At a time when inspiring movies are rare, Sudhi’s tale is a sure bet.
