Playing mythological characters has made me a better person: Karthik
For actor Karthik Jayaram, mythology is more than a genre — it is a source of personal growth. Fresh from the success of Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart (Hridayam), in which he plays Satrajit, the father of Satyabhama, Karthik says his connection with mythological storytelling has only deepened over the years. He tells us more:
‘Audiences still want and enjoy watching honest, rooted stories’
People often say it has become difficult to bring audiences to theatres. But when you make a good film with strong emotions, people will come. Many viewers told me they want more films like this because children should know our mythology and culture. These stories never lose their relevance. Cinema becomes powerful when it connects emotionally with people.
‘Every mythological role changes the way you think and look at life’
When I played Ravana, in Siya Ke Ram, I understood how greed and ego can eventually destroy a person. It makes you realise that nothing is permanent.
Working on Krishnavataram introduced me to new dimensions of Lord Krishna’s journey and to Satrajit, a character I knew little about before taking on the role. The
dialogues in such films stay with you. Lord Krishna’s words are so profound and meaningful. Mythology genuinely changes the way you think and look
at life. After doing this film, I felt we complain too much in life. When Lord Krishna himself endured so many hardships from birth, what are we
really upset about? These stories teach acceptance, resilience and perspective.
‘I don’t fear being typecast’
I want to do more mythological dramas. They give me a different kind of excitement as an actor. Kannada film legend Dr Rajkumar sir played many mythological roles during his career, and people loved him. Our mythology is beautiful, and there are endless stories to be told.
