M.S Umesh to Ravikumar Menon: A look at recent death in South Indian cinema

The cinema of South India is built on the shoulders of artists whose performances felt less like acting and more like slices of real life. For decades, these legendary actors shaped the culture, laughter, and drama cherished by millions. The recent string of farewells, spanning the Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam industries, marks a deeply felt moment of reflection. Here’s a look at the most notable losses so far this year.

M. S. Umesh

The Kannada film fraternity mourned the profound loss of comedy stalwart M. S. Umesh today, November 30, 2025. Known for his classic line, "Apartha Madkobedi", Umesh acted in over 350 films. He was recently hospitalized after a fall, which tragically led to the diagnosis of Stage Four Liver Cancer. His passing brings a quiet close to a six-decade-long career that delighted audiences with light-hearted humor, notably earning him a State Award for his role in Katha Sangama.

B. Saroja Devi

In mid-July 2025, the industry lost a legendary leading lady, B. Saroja Devi, who passed away in Bengaluru on July 14 at the age of 87 due to age-related ailments. Revered across the South, she was fondly known as “Abhinaya Saraswathi”. Over her seven-decade career, she lit up the screen in more than 200 films. Her graceful artistry was recognized with high civilian honors, including both the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan, cementing her status as a true screen icon for generations of fans.

Kota Srinivasa Rao

The Telugu and Pan-Indian film landscape suffered a huge blow on July 13, 2025, with the passing of veteran Kota Srinivasa Rao, aged 83, following a prolonged illness. Rao mastered both commanding villainous roles and sharp comedic characters in over 750 films. His distinctive voice modulation and impactful presence in blockbusters like ‘Athadu’ and ‘Bommarillu’ were legendary. A former MLA, he was celebrated for his wide-ranging career, culminating in the Padma Shri award in 2015.

Vishnu Prasad

In a heartbreaking loss earlier on May 2, 2025, Malayalam actor Vishnu Prasad passed away in Kochi at the young age of 49. His death was caused by a severe liver-related illness while he was urgently awaiting a liver transplant. His untimely demise cut short a promising career, leaving behind a legacy of compelling and memorable performances in films such as Lion.

Bank Janardhan

The tributes continued in mid-April 2025, with the passing of veteran Kannada comedy actor Bank Janardhan on April 13 at the age of 76 due to health complications. A highly recognizable face in Sandalwood for over four decades, Janardhan was beloved for his iconic, effortless comic roles and exceptional timing.
