80's strike back in Kollywood!

As heroes from the golden 80s gear up for a comeback, TOI tracks the trend.
80's strike back in Kollywood!
Its a classic case of the past revisiting the present in Kollywood! A number of heroes who struck gold during the 80s Ramarajan, Mohan, Karthik and Suresh, to name a few are all set to take Kollywood by storm. Again.
Needless to say, they are visibly excited. Actor Karthik, who is making his comeback as Arun Vijays older brother in Maanja Velu, is thrilled about his second innings.

Its important to feel significant while making a comeback. In that sense, I have been lucky. The artistes whom I worked with earlier are showering their love and affection on me and the younger crop too holds me in high esteem, opines the Agni Nakshatram star.
With the surging competition in the industry, these veterans are leaving no stone unturned to keep up with their younger counterparts. Actor Mohan, famous for his romantic roles in the 80s, says, Doing films was always a challenge. Even during my heyday, a Friday decided the fate of a star. The trend continues. I personally believe if the audience likes an actor, they will go to the theatre irrespective of his age. My last release, Sutta Pazham, may not have run to packed houses, but people who like me watched the film.
While some seniors are sweating it out to look their best opposite heroines almost half their age, there are those who feel that these yesteryear heroes should stick to playing their age.
Says actor Sibiraj, who has shared screen space with his father Sathyaraj in films like Jor and Kovai Brothers, Though the trend is encouraging, I feel that veteran actors who are making a comeback should do something more substantial than running around trees. The audience today wants meaningful cinema. So, senior actors should play roles that complement their age. But doesnt he feel that this comeback will eat into the market of younger stars? No, every hero has his own set of followers. When it comes to romance, I still prefer my fathers old flicks. Leave the romance to us, says Sibi.

Actor Thalaivasal Vijay agrees and adds, Its good to see these veterans competing with young blood, but they should concentrate on teaming up with younger heroes to play noteworthy roles. A good example is how actor Prabhu teamed up with Ajith in Aasal. This is how it is in the Malayalam film industry. It would be great if Tamil cinema follows suit.
The 80s idols themselves seem to be game for experimentation as many of them are testing new waters. For instance, actor Ramarajan, who gave us the cult comedy Karagattakaran and acted in a number of rural-centric films, will play an urban character in his comeback vehicle Medhai. While actors Suresh, Bhagyaraj and Prabhu have stepped into supporting characters, actor Mohan, who has a special place among the family audience, has opted to play an anti-hero in his upcoming films. Concludes Thalaivasal Vijay, Tamil cinema has come of age with story lines and treatment becoming more mature. Let's see if these yesteryear heroes adapt to the winds of change.
