Makalasainya attempts to combine multiple themes within a children’s film, but the overall execution feels scattered and uneven. The film begins with government school children preparing for a school trip to Chitradurga, convincing their parents to allow them to participate. During a play session at school, they come across a copy of the Ramayana, after which a teacher narrates the story of Ramanjaneya bringing the Sanjeevini. This idea leaves a strong impression on the children and later becomes an important thread in the narrative.
The film then shifts focus toward drug awareness. Police officers visit the school to educate students about substance abuse and discuss their efforts to track down a drug peddler. Motivated by this, the children decide to help beggars on the streets by exposing the gang involved in drug activities. A considerable portion of the film follows the children as they gradually execute their plan, confront the gang, and eventually hand them over to the police, while also helping the needy with the rewarded money.
Just as the narrative appears to conclude, the film returns to the earlier Sanjeevini concept. When one of the children falls seriously ill, the group sets out in search of the mythical herb on a hill they had seen during their school trip. Without informing their parents, the children travel day and night to reach the location, while their families desperately search for them. The film eventually ends on a tragic note, with the death of a parent who is deeply distressed over his missing daughter.
While the film carries messages about drug abuse, social awareness, and the innocence of children, the storytelling lacks cohesion. The narrative constantly shifts between themes without developing a smooth emotional or dramatic flow. As a result, the film feels jumbled and inconsistent rather than engaging.
The child actors put in sincere efforts, but many scenes come across as overly staged and dramatic. Technically as well, the film remains below average and struggles in its execution. The primary issue lies in the writing, which attempts to handle several ideas at once without connecting them organically. Although the intentions behind the film are appreciable, the lack of narrative clarity prevents it from delivering an impactful viewing experience.
