The 23-year-old, a member of the K-pop girl group, took to Instagram to issue a formal apology for wearing the piece of clothing with the problematic imagery.

"Hello, this is Chaeyoung from TWICE. I sincerely apologize regarding the Instagram post. I didn’t correctly recognize the meaning of the tilted swastika in the t-shirt I wore," she wrote in English.

"I deeply apologize for not thoroughly reviewing it, causing concern. I will pay absolute attention in the future to prevent any situation similar from happening again. Sincerely apologize again," she added.

Chaeyoung had shared the photo wearing a tee with Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious sporting a swastika — associated Adolf Hitler and the German Nazi party. However, she quickly deleted the post after many took offence and slammed her for the choice of clothing.

The controversy also had many others taking to Twitter to call the Nazi symbol of hate 'Hakenkreuz' and not 'Swastika' a religious symbol for Hindus.
