They’re a bunch of talented young musicians who got together as a means to distract themselves from the various events that were unfurling in their personal lives at that time. But, a number of shows down the line, the band has made a name for itself and is now all set to take the city by storm.
There’s something endearing about a band that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
It’s not the fact that they’re called Tails On Fire that gives them a goofy edge — it’s the fact that no one seems to know how the name even came to be! Karan Nair, vocalist, of the band that comprises TT Sriram (guitars), Jitesh Dharamaraj (bass) and Ritesh Dharmaraj (drums), explains how the band was formed. “Jitesh and Sriram had this project in mind for a few years. But it was a string of unfortunate events that pushed them into finally completing the line-up. All of us have been around for a while now, with stints in other bands — some of the guys have even opened for The Scorpions and Iron Maiden,” he says.
As for their brand of music, Karan says that the mantra is to keep it simple. “As of now, we attempt anything that you can jump around to, that isn’t metal-based,” he says. Who are their inspirations? “Foo Fighters, Alterbridge, RATM, Dave Matthews Band, Biffy Cylro... we are also influenced by a lot of acoustic projects, solo artists and a whole load of what is assumed to be commercially-unviable music.” And when it comes to their original compositions, Karan reveals that the key is to not think too much. He explains, “The best songs are the ones that come out of goofing around. But they are all grounded in reality.”
Finally, ask him what their plans are for the future, and he shrugs, “The immediate requirement is for us to do a few more shows and get more recognition. That apart, we’re going to take it one day, one note at a time.”
