Story: Rustom Pavri (Akshay Kumar), an honourable officer of the Indian Navy shoots his friend Vikram (Arjan Bajwa) to death after discovering that his wife Cynthia (Ileana D'Cruz) had an affair with the rich businessman. The Commander surrenders himself to the Police immediately and admits to have killed Vikram but pleads 'not guilty' in court. Is he convicted or acquitted?

Review: Though the climax has been smartly fictionalised, this courtroom drama is essentially based on the real life of Naval officer K M Nanavati, who in 1959, shot and killed his wife's lover. The subsequent trial was one of India's most sensational court cases.

movie

Coming to the film, Rustom has a cracker of a beginning. Without wasting any time, the director comes straight to the point. He takes us quickly through the circumstances in which Rustom shoots Vikram and the trial begins.

Akshay Kumar is the backbone of Rustom. The Khiladi renders one of the most understated performances of his career, proving yet again that he can play a range of diverse roles with aplomb. He smoothly pulls off his character with utmost ease.

Based on a controversial case, Rustom lacks the unnerving tension one ideally expects from a film of this genre. However, director Tinu Suresh Desai infuses ample melodrama and ups the intrigue. Ileana D'Cruz is perfectly cast and does complete justice to her role. Arjan Bajwa is decent as well.

To cut to the chase, Rustom can be watched for its story and most importantly Akshay Kumar, whose action/comic brilliance often overshadows his acting prowess. He reminds you to value the honest officers who serve our country with dignity and valour. He makes you want to support the man who probably did the right thing the wrong way.

Summary / Analysis

Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
Rustom Pavri (Akshay Kumar), an honourable officer of the Indian Navy returns home from the sea before schedule. He yearns to see his wife wife Cynthia (Ileana) but is surprised to not have her at home. Their maid informs him that she's not been home for two days. Rustom calls up his friend Preeti (Esha Gupta) to enquire about Cynthia but she says she's not aware of her whereabouts. Commander Pavri also calls up Preeti's brother Vikram (Arjan Bajwa) but his servant says he is not at home. Rustom goes through Cynthia's things to discover hidden love letters exchanged with a certain MR V. He goes over to Vikram's home to spot Cynthia and Vikram together. Cynthia admits to her infidelity and breaks down in tears. A shocked Rustom leaves immediately to meet Vikram. He loads a pistol and collects it from the ship before confronting him. He shoots Vikram thrice before surrendering himself to police. He admits to the crime and refuses naval custody, even a defence lawyer to fight his case. He pleads not guilty and says he will fight his own case. Preeti wants Rustom punished for killing her brother. The Parsi community, including an editor of a tabloid come together to support Rustom, who is a decorated officer of the navy. The jury trail begins and the prosecution tries to prove that Vikram's death was a premeditated murder and not a heat of the moment incident. Rustom claims that he had a scuffle with Vikram after confronting him and he shot him to defend himself. Meanwhile, a few naval officers want Rustom to handover some confidential papers to them. Cynthia meets Rustom's senior and asks for Rs 5 crore if they seek the papers. The officer agrees and hands her over the cheque. Rustom almost proves himself not guilty as there's no solid evidence against him. The investigating officer however finds a tape which confirms that Rustom had vowed to kill Vikram. He presents the tape in court and knows he may have swayed the jury's decision. But back in the prison, Rustom confesses to the cop that he did plan Vikram's murder because he was involved in a scam that threatened national security. He wanted Rustom to clear the inspection of a damaged plane carrier, which Rustom refused to. He warns his fellow corrupt officers to not buy the carrier else he will make his report public. He shoots Vikram after he says he doesn't love Cynthia and won't marry every woman he sleeps with. The court has no proof of this or the scam whatsoever. Rustom is acquitted by the jury amidst the public support and his clean reputation.
