Let's add more power to Pink

Story: Three Delhi girls - Minal (Taapsee), Falak (Kirti) and Andrea (Andrea) - are on the run after one of them escapes a molestation attempt by a pig-headed, powerful guy, Rajveer (Angad). Minal attacks Rajveer with a bottle injuring him grievously. This is just the beginning of their nightmare!

Review: Pink is a powerful statement on the existing feudal mindset of a majority of India, where men and women are judged by a different yardstick. And if the man happens to be from a powerful family, then the fight for justice is even more skewed.

movie

As it happens here, Minal, Falak and Andrea, three middle-class normal working girls, are just out for a regular night of fun. Post a rock concert they accept a dinner invitation from Rajveer and two others to a resort in Surajkund. Unfortunately the evening takes an ugly turn for them after a couple of drinks. Andrea finds herself being touched inappropriately by Dumpy (Raashul Tandon) and Rajveer forces himself onto Minal, despite her clearly saying ‘No’ to his advances. In self-defense she picks up a bottle and smashes it on his eye, leaving him bleeding. The girls return to their home hoping the night will just fade away. But their lives are turned into a living hell by the guys who malign and intimidate them in every way possible. The ultimate blow comes when Rajveer uses his powerful connections to file a wrong FIR against the girls labelling them prostitutes.

When the matter comes up in court with defense lawyer Deepak Sehgall (Amitabh), who has a bipolar disorder, representing the girls, the film takes a dramatic turn. The court-room sequence, which is inspired by Jonathan Kaplan’s The Accused (1988), where the accused Minal is asked scathing questions on her virginity and drinking habits lays bare the double standards of the society we live in. Pink questions the society’s mindset where we think girls with short hemlines and those who enjoy a drink with men are low on morals. It also tells you that whether a woman is a sex-worker, wife or slave, if she says ‘no’ to being touched, then no man has the right to force himself on her. Or outrage her modesty.

The performances are pitch-perfect with Bachchan leading the way. Creative producer, Shoojit Sircar, who directed (Vicky Donor, Madras Café, Piku) makes another valuable addition to his repetoire.

Summary / Analysis

Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
Plot Summary

The film is based in New Delhi, known for its atrocities and crime against women. Deepak Sehgall (Amitabh Bachchan) is a lawyer suffering from bipolar disorder who experiences frequent mood swings. One night, Rajveer (Angad Bedi) and his friends get drunk and try to molest Minal Arora (Taapsee Pannu) and her two roommates (Kirti Kulhari-Falak and Andrea Tariang-Andrea) leading to an accident. How Deepak fights the girls’ case against the three influential lads forms the crux of the story.
The film opens with Rajveer Singh, who is the nephew of a powerful politician, Ranjit Singh being rushed to a hospital because of a badly injured eye. It is learnt from the conversation between him and his friends Vishwa and Dumpy that Minal has attaclked him with a bottle causing his an almost life-threatening injuring.
He is bleeding profusely and when the boys admit him to a Delhi Hospital, the cops perform an emergency surgery to take off the shreds of glass from his eye.
They also ask the boys whether they should actually report the case to the police. However, the boys refuse point blank. They tell the doctor-just save our friend.
Next, you see Minal, Falak and Andrea trying to go their normal routine. Minal goes for a jog in the morning. Her neighbour across the road, criminal lawyer Deepak Sehghall who also steps out for morning walk with a breathing mask, stares at her intently. Falak and Andrea go about their morning routine but you can sense that there is something they are refusing to face. Eventually the girls decide that not addressing an issue will not make it go away. So they talk about how their previous night panned out. How Minal was forced to attack Rajveer who had misbehaved. The girls also wonder what will happen next. They hope the nightmare will fade away, but they know that it may come to revisit them.
In the meantime their landlord who lives in another area gets a mysterious phone call. The caller tells him to throw the girls out because they are of questionable character.
The landlord pays the girls a visit but he sees nothing wrong with them. He likes the girls and believes they are good girls. However when the landlord is returning home, some miscreants attack him. He is knocked down from his scooter. Once again he is warned to throw the girls out.
He then asks the girls what really happened.
Andrea is also chased by some goondas when she is returning from work. Minal is abducted in a van and threatened that she will be raped and killed if she doesn't say sorry to Rajveer. Deepak who watches this is disturbed. He asks his friend from the Police to take action. However when the Police hear that Rajveer is the nephew of Ranjit Singh, the politician, they drag their feet.
Minal goes with a friend from her dance troupe to lodge a FIR against the boys. But the cop from Delhi tells her that since the incident took place at Surajkund, the FIR must be lodged there. Next the cops tells her to forget about the FIR. He tells her that she must sleep over it because she has no idea what she will be put through if this case come to trial.
Minal returns home. The three friends decide to apologise to Rajveer and bury the hatchet. However Rajveer speaks so badly to them, they withdraw their apology. They challenge him to do whatever the hell he can.
Rajveer and his friends then file a FIR against the girls. They label them sex-workers and say the whole confusion began that night at the Surajkund lodge because the girls asked for money in return of sexual favours.
Minal is arrested and spends the night in the lockup.
Falak and Andrea request Deepak to fight her case.
Deepak who has left practicising law a while ago because of his mental deterioration is hesitant. Besides he also has an ailing wife to take care off. However, seeing the plight of the girls he feels sorry for them. And decides to defend them.
In the courtroom, the prosecuting lawyer, Piyush Mishra does his level best to establish the girls are prostitutes.
However Deepak's arguement that whether a girl is a drunk, a sex-worker or a wife...if she says No to a man, then he has no right to force himself on her, swings the case in favour of the girls.
The girls and Deepak also become close after their case ends. When Deepak's wife passes away, the girls go over to share his grief. They light candles in front of his wife's photograph. A new bond is established of a caring patriarch who watches over three normal working girls who have been through a gruelling time.
Spoiler alert ahead...
The end titles actually show you what happened that fateful night at the Surajkund resort. The three girls actually atttend a rock concert and when one of their male friends Vishwa who is accompanied by Rajveer and Dumpy invites them for dinner they accept. At the resort, the girls agree to have a drink before dinner. However when Andrea wants to use the toilet, Rajveer tells her to go to another room. She goes there with Dumpy who shuts the door. When she is out of the toilet, Dumpy touches her inappropriately.
Falak is standing out waiting for Andrea with Vishwa. Finding himself alone with Minal, Rajveer attempts to kiss her. When she resists he forces himself on her. Minal keeps saying ``No, no, no'' but Rajveer doesn't pay heed to her. In self-defence Minal picks up a liquor bottle and smashes his eye. Frankly it is an accident. Minal didn't intend to hit him badly or leave him bleeding. She just wants to get away.
One can clearly see that hers is an act of self-defence not a cold-blooded, planned attack as the prosecutor was trying to establish in the courtroom.
