The biopic on India’s celebrated skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (played by Sushant Singh Rajput) is the cricketer’s ode to his well-wishers, friends and family, who stood by him at all times - in success and failure. Their immense contribution in fulfilling his dream, his faith in himself and ability to battle professional and personal setbacks, forms the story. The movie follows the journey of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a budding cricketer from Ranchi, who became the most successful captain of the Indian Cricket Team. He was a ticket collector before he became a cricketer. The movie begins with the ICC Cricket World Cup Final (India vs Sri Lanka) in the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai where Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Sushant Singh Rajput) is watching the match live on screen. He decides to take the stand, and tells the authorities that he would go for batting if the wicket falls down. Dhoni takes up his bat and leads down the stairs amidst the roar of the crowd. The movie then goes into a flashback in Ranchi, Bihar in 1981, the year Dhoni was born. Dhoni’s alleged rivalry with Yuvraj Singh and a few senior players also finds a mention in the film.

1. The film has been shot in the same school where MS Dhoni studied. Dhoni's real life teachers have played teachers in his biopic too
2. Akshay Kumar had shown interest in playing Dhoni's part but since his looks did not match Dhoni's, director Neeraj Pandey politely denied his request
3. Director Neeraj Pandey hadn't seen any of Sushant Singh Rajput's films and he finalized him after a general 20-minute conversation with him. Dhoni himself had suggested Sushant's name to play him in the biopic
4. The film has also been dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi languages
5. There is a scene in the film where Dhoni is being lambasted by the selectors for ruthlessly dropping three senior cricketers. While in the trailer, the names of the cricketers aren't revealed, reports claim that they are VVS Laxman, Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. The portion where the cricketers have been named has now been removed from the film, as the producers felt it was "disrespectful" to them
6. Sushant Singh Rajput had a long list of questions for MS Dhoni at the time he was doing research work for his character. Dhoni revealed that being asked so many questions annoyed him at a point
7. The film marks the Bollywood debut of Disha Patani
