PLOT SUMMARY
Brothers begins with flamboyant mixed martial arts promoter Peter Braganza (Kiran) introducing his 'Right 2 Fight-R2F' tournament in India, seeking the best prize-fighters around. Meanwhile, an elderly, trembling Gary Fernandes (Jackie), former fight champion, is being released from Thane Central Jail after years. Gary looks desperately for his wedding ring and wife Maria's (Shefali) pictures in his belongings.
He is greeted outside jail by his son Monty (Siddharth) but Monty gets upset when Gary asks about his elder son David (Akshay). Monty takes Gary home where Gary is furious to see furniture moved about in a style different to his wife's. Monty goes for a prize-fight where Braganza is watching the sport. Cheerful manager Badshah (Ashutosh) recognises Gary as a champ but Monty, despite expectations, loses the fight. He is hooked onto drinking the same alcohol which his father was once hooked on but which Gary has now given up.
Meanwhile, David teaches physics in a school where the children are fascinated by his tattoos. He meets his bank manager who tells him his loan repayments can't be extended. David tells him he can't control expenses due to his daughter Phupo who has a kidney problem and needs regular dialysis. David decides to earn extra money by prize-fighting that night. His wife Jenny (Jacqueline) discovers and is upset as he's won but hurt himself too.
David's school principal Desai (Kulbhushan) hears of his fighting and reluctantly fires him. In a flashback at the hospital where his daughter is having treatment, David remembers his bleak, dark life before he met Jenny. When they return home, Gary has come to meet David, holding flowers. Gary wants to meet his granddaughter, little Maria, but David tells Gary to go away and pushes him. Monty sees this from his car and is outraged. As he rushes at David, Gary forces Monty back. The flowers get crushed under their feet.
Back in their dark home, Gary smashes mirrors and weeps. Monty remembers how he first entered this home, as Gary's illegitimate son from an affair, and how Maria overcame her own inner turmoil to accept him. David became Monty's loving elder brother but Gary's drinking ruined the family as one day, in a drunken fit, he hit Maria back during an argument and killed her. Before dying, Maria reaches out to Monty but anguished David yells him away.
Monty remembers his past and wins the next fight he combats. As a celebration, he's treated to an item number by Mary (Kareena) but remains unmoved.
Meanwhile, Braganza has announced his foreign prize-fighters and unveils his list of Indian champions - which includes both David and Monty Fernandes.
Jenny supports David's wish to try the R2F tournament for their child but tells him she won't be able to watch him fight. Both brothers train furiously for the tournament where Monty takes a flying start by knocking out several foreign champs. David is considered older and weaker - but also surprisingly punches out his opponents. He texts Jenny who's thrilled and starts coming to see his matches.
David savagely ignores his father's attempts to wish him luck but one day, when David's opponent Hammer strikes out at Gary, who's encouraging David from the crowd, David nearly kills Hammer. The day comes when David and Monty have to fight each other. Monty is hurt that Gary still supports David. As the contest starts, Gary can't bear it and exits the stadium but watches the match on a screen outside. David beats Monty and breaks his shoulder. Monty insists on continuing the fight although Gary, who's now inside, pleads with both brothers to stop. As Jenny watches, shocked by the violence, David keeps getting flashes of memory and sees Monty as the little boy he loved. David finally has Monty in a choke-hold where he begs him to quit but Monty tells him he's being selfish as always - and that he should remember Maria was his mother too.
Something in the two brothers reconnects and Monty accepts losing to David. Happily.
