Will Mardaani change Rani Mukerji's luck?

Rani Mukerji’s character in Mardaani takes inspiration from a real- life cop posted at Mumbai’s crime branch. Her character in the film Mardaani is apparently based on a real- life lady police officer from the Mumbai crime branch, who solved several child trafficking cases in the city. It may be noted here that the cast and crew of the film have signed a non- disclosure clause with the production house. This means that they are not at liberty to share any information about the film with the media at this stage.

She wanted to play it realistically and we have just helped her do that.” Roy adds that Rani wanted to know in detail about the challenges faced by cops and the lifestyle we lead. So we put her in touch with two lady officers from the crime branch. She then spent some time with them to get a better idea about their lives.” Roy also reveals that the actress went on to meet the lady police offer whose life has inspired Rani’s character in the film. “I cannot reveal her name but yes, she was an officer at the crime branch,” he says.

Mardaani's story revolves around a teenage girl who is kidnapped and smuggled out of the city by child traffickers and how Rani’s character embarks on a hunt for the girl. When asked why Rani was cast and not his favourite Vidya Balan whom he introduced in Parineeta, Sarkar replied in an interview to Mumbai Mirror, "Yes, Vidya is my favourite. But I have other favourites too. And Rani is definitely one of them. I have a very comfortable equation with Rani. And things just fell into place as far as Rani's inclusion in the film is concerned. The Chopra bahu has apparently indulged in a lot of stunts. According to reports, Rani shot a motorcycle scene for which she required the help of a body double. As per the Mid-Day report, the onlookers also got a bit confused between Rani Mukerji and her body double as both were dressed similarly for the shoot. Rani had created a mark for herself with her powerful portrayal of a headstrong journalist in No One Killed Jessica and a grieving mother in Talaash (2012).
