Radhika Apte in view of 'PadMan' says it's seldom that such social issues are blended so well with entertainment

Radhika Apte has time and again proved her worth as a credible actor in the industry. Lately, the actor is sinking in all the appreciation that has come her way through her last release with Akshay Kumar titled ‘PadMan’. On her experience of working with Akshay, Radhika told a daily that she feels glad to be a part of something that made a difference to the society. It is not every day that such social issues are blended so well with entertainment. And that’s exactly what makes her happy to be associated with such a project.

Talking about ‘PadMan’, Radhika opined in an earlier interview that one film cannot bring all the changes to a practice that is happening for ages, if people start talking about menstruation comfortably, be aware of the importance of menstruation hygiene, it would be more than enough for the film’s team.

On the work front, Radhika seems to have an interesting bunch of films for the year ahead with Sriram Raghavan’s ‘Shoot The Piano Player’, ‘Bazaar’ with Saif Ali Khan and Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Bhavesh Joshi’. Interestingly, she is currently occupied shooting for Michael Winterbottom’s next with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ fame Dev Patel. However, the ‘Phobia’ actor has kept mum about the same. She reportedly said that things are still in process and she can’t spill out any more details about it.

Here’s a list of 5 quotes by the actress that you can’t miss.

On wage disparity

Radhika added her voice to the fight for wage equality for women when she noted that her male friends get paid three times more than her. She said, "There is a lot of inequality. I'm friends with all my contemporaries. I know who gets paid what. My male friends get three times more pay than me. We have so many male superstars, but there are just a few female actors who have attained that status. It is not only because of the industry, it's in the society. If films starring Deepika or Priyanka will start working like a Salman Khan movie, we will start having female superstars. People still can't digest the fact or imagine that a female actor can be a superstar."

On Pakistani artists in India

In the wake of surgical strikes conducted by the Indian army on Pakistan, there was widespread chatter about banning Pakistani artists in India. Radhika offered her take on the issue as well as she said, “I think if a Swiss watch can come to the country and have their own corporate stores, a Pakistani actor should come here and do a film here in India.”

On casting couch

Bollywood has been plagued by the evil of casting couch for many years and a lot of film personalities have spoken out against it. Radhika also spoke about how she knows many people who have faced the infamous situation. She said, “I know a lot of casting couch and I know a lot of people who have gone through it. I genuinely haven't gone through it. I'm fortunate that I've never met people who have asked me to.”

On her intimate scenes from ‘Parched’ being leaked online

Radhika has had to face her share of controversies surrounding leaks of footage from her films. Most notably is the instance when an intimate scene from her last film ‘Parched’ found its way online, Radhika laughed off the whole incident. She was quoted saying, “When some of my intimate scenes from Parched were leaked online, I learned about it while having breakfast with my husband. I was expecting this to happen anyway, and we both laughed it off. Why should people who don’t matter to me have a say in my life or my decisions? It is not about people’s perception of you, but about your own growth, both as a human being and as an artist.”

On the importance of not letting menstruation get in the way of doing things

Radhika, who will be seen in ‘Padman’, a film on Arunachalam Muruganantham, who introduced low-cost sanitary pad making machines, spoke about the importance of stepping out during menstruation at an event earlier this year. She said, “"I think that it is crucial because the constant reminder when you are chumming that 'I am on period' does stop you from doing certain things.

"For example if I am chumming, I will be like, 'Oh my god I have to shoot a song today', or 'Oh my god, I have to wear this today' or some people say I have extra hours of work, or I don't know should I go for picnic or play Holi. Why should your period which is actually something that you have to go through every month stop you from doing anything?”
