Popular Bollywood songs that were turned into movie titles

Bollywood is the second largest film industry. The craze of Bollywood films and film stars are not limited to India only. The industry is immensely popular all over the world. One of the most distinctive features of the Indian film industry is the presence of songs and dances in the movies. The songs provide a visual treat for the audience, at the same time providing a relief from the continuous narration. The catchy lyrics and quirky dance moves help hook the audience. Some lyrics are so catchy that it has also caught the attention of the filmmakers who have in turn used them as their film’s titles. Here we take a look at some of the songs that were turned into movie titles.

‘Koi Mil Gaya’

Rakesh Roshan’s 2003 film, ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ starring Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta was an Indian science fiction film. The name of the film is taken after one of the popular songs from Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan starrer ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ by the same name.
Released in the year 1998, the song was sung by Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamurthy and featured the lead SRK, Kajol and Rani in the song.

‘Om Shanti Om’

Farah Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ starred Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead. The film, which in itself consisted of about 12 chartbuster songs, all composed by Vishal-Shekhar, had its name picked up from one of the iconic songs of Bollywood.
Picturised on Rishi Kapoor and sung by Kishore Kumar, the song ‘Om Shanti Om’ from the film ‘Karz’, directed by Subhash Ghai, became very popular.
Also, the theme of Farah Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ was also based on the concept of reincarnation just as the Rishi Kapoor starrer ‘Karz’. So probably, the filmmaker thought it best to name the film after the popular song.

‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’

Siddharth Anand’s ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ starring Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba was one of the highest grossing movies of the year 2008. The title of the movie was taken from RD Burman’s groovy number from the film ‘Hum Kisi Se Kum Naheen’ and was crooned by none other than Kishore Kumar.
The 2008 film also had a remixed version of the song in the movie which was reprised by Sumit Kumar and Vishal Dadlani.

‘Dil Dhadakne Do’

Zoya Akhtar’s multi-starrer family drama film ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ boasted of an ensemble cast comprising of Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose and others.
The title of the film is taken from another of her own film, ‘Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara’ starring Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin in pivotal roles. The song in the film is sung by Shankar Mahadev Mahadevan, Suraj Jagan and Joy Barua.

‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’

Ayan Mukerji’s ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ starred Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kalki Koechlin and Kunaal Roy Kapur. The film, which was a super hit success at the box-office, had some chartbuster songs to its credit.
However, the title of the film itself is taken from another super hit song from ‘Jawani Deewani’ starring Randhir Kapoor and Jaya Bachchan.
Like all the tracks in the Ranbir Kapoor starrer, this too remains one of the most popular tracks people love to groove to even today.

‘Baar Baar Dekho’

Although Nitya Mehra’s romantic drama starred a fresh pairing of Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra, the film failed to impress the audience and the critics alike. However, the title of the film is inspired from the 1962 song by the same name. The popular song was sung by Mohammed Rafi and was composed by Ravi. The song featured in the movie ‘China Town’ starring Shammi Kapoor.
The song, which is still popular today, went on to become an instant hit at that time. The lyrics of the song suited the Sidharth-Katrina starrer as it was based on the theme of time where the actor is seen going back and forth in time.

‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’

Late legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra’s last film before his sad demise was titled, ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma. The film was rich with music maestro AR Rahman’s music and Gulzar’s poem.
The title of the film was also part of a famous song from one of the most iconic films of Bollywood, ‘Sholay’. Starring Hema Malini and Dharmendra, the song has the actress dancing barefoot on glass particles in order to save the actor’s life from Gabbar, the antagonist in the film.
The music from the legendary film was composed by RD Burman.

‘Jai Ho’

The song, ‘Jai Ho’ still remains one of the most popular songs of AR Rahman from the Oscar-winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The song in the 2008 film was sung by Sukhvinder Singh, Mahalaxmi Iyer and Vijay Prakash. The song inspired Sohail Khan’s Salman Khan and Daisy Shah starrer ‘Jai Ho’.
The song was reportedly a massive success and went on to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture.
