Hemanta Mukherjee: Everlasting and haunting compositions

'Naa tum hame jaano'

This song is from the film Baat Ek Raat ki. It is an immortal composition rendered by Hemanta Da. The tune pulls one into a reverie of eternal love and bliss from where no one ever wants to come back to reality. The songs tugs at one's heart strings. Picturised romantically on the beautiful Waheeda Rehman and the evergreen Dev Anand, sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Hemanta Da himself, this song is a gem.

'Tum pukaar lo'

Khamoshi is a beautiful film with some really beautiful songs. The dreamy cinematography of Kamal Bose accentuates the lovelorn lyrics of this song penned by Gulzaar Saab. Another Hemanta Mukherjee song that is picturised on the beautiful Waheeda Rehman, this is a haunting melody that wants to make one think of everything that one has craved for badly but lost it to time and circumstances. The fleeting emotions and the impermanence of life is brought out so well in this song that seethes with philosophy. After hearing this composition one is forced to think whether they make such songs anymore or not.

'Yeh nayan dare dare'

This song is from the film Kohra and is picturised on the beautiful Waheeda Rehman and Biswajeet. The notion of living life for the moment was so beautifully put across through the soothing melody that it drags one to an era of immortal nostalgia. After listening to it one is bound to drown in the melody. His velvety rendition of the song automatically lulled into a sleep that shrouds all humane cravings lending a peculiar peace to the soul. An ultimate romantic song for hearts beating together till kingdom come.

'Yaa dil ki suno duniya waalo'

This is another song that reeks with philosophy. It is picturised on the original He-man of the hindi film industry Dharmendra and the Bengali beauty Sharmila Tagore from the film Anupama. The song is an ode to the poor forlorn heart. The lyrics slam the hypocrisy of the world. It speaks about someone who is not ready to shroud sorrow under the guise of happiness. It is cold blue sorrow and it is meant to break one's heart and numb one's very being with pain. The song is all about the pangs of remorse the heart wails under. The poet feels it is upto the people to listen to him because he speaks his heart out and if they are bored to hear it, he would be happy to be quiet, but because they urged him to speak, this is all he has to say.

'Yaad kiya dil ne kahan ho tum'

This song is composed by the magical duo who were perhaps the greatest composers to have ever existed in the hindi Film Industry Shankar-Jaikishen. Sung by Hemanta Mukherjee and Lata Mangeshkar, this song is from the film Patita. The song is picturised on the evergreen Dev Anand and Usha Kiran.

'Yeh raat yeh chandni phir kahan'

This song is from the film Jaal. The music had been composed by SD Burman. The film was directed by Guru Dutt and it had Dev Anand and Geeta bali in the lead roles. This is another haunting melody that the lover sings for his estranged beloved. The lyrics have a rebellious touch to them where the lover urges his love to forget the rest of the world and bask in the glory and warmth of young love because once the time passes, it will never come back.
