Bollywood’s hit directors who are coming back after a long time

Bollywood is currently experiencing a fresh new wave with an array of filmmakers making their foray into filmmaking. However, there also have been some hit directors who gave us some path-breaking cinema in the past. The filmmakers who not only shaped the way we tell stories in our films but also raised the bar in Bollywood to an altogether different level. We take a look at some epic filmmakers who have been away from the direction for a bit too long and are now all set to come back to what they do the best...
2/6

Rajkummar Hirani

With just a handful of films under his belt, director Rajkumar Hirani is currently ruling the roost. There is no actor in the industry who does not wish to work with the ace filmmaker. He has films like ‘Munna Bhai M.B.B.S’, ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘PK’ to his credit and each one of them has proved to be super hit movies that are remembered and loved even today.

The filmmaker prefers to make films at his own will and while the audience waits for it with bated breath, he proves the wait worthwhile every time he comes up with the film. After his last venture ‘PK’ in 2014, he is all set to weave his magic once again.

Hirani is currently busy with his upcoming project after four years. He will be seen helming the Sanjay Dutt biopic starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead. Apart from his direction, the film boasts of an ensemble cast with actors like Manisha Koirala, Sonam Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and others.
3/6

JP Dutta

Director JP Dutta is known for his patriotic war films in the action genre. With films like ‘Border’, ‘LOC Kargil’, ‘Refugee’, and others to his credit, the filmmaker is undoubtedly a master story-teller and strikes the right chord with the audience.

After helming his last venture ‘Umrao Jaan’ starring Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan in 2006, the ace director will be seen donning the director’s cap after almost a decade with his upcoming ambitious project ‘Paltan’.

‘Paltan’, following his trademark, boasts of an ensemble star cast including Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, Arjun Rampal, Esha Gupta, Sonu Sood and others.
4/6

Rajkumar Santoshi

He has some of the most notable films like ‘Ghayal’, ‘Damini’, ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ and others to his credit. Rajkumar Santoshi, who helmed his last film ‘Phata Poster Nikhla Hero’ starring Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D’Cruz in 2013, is all set to make a comeback.

The filmmaker is reportedly planning to make a film on the Battle of Saragarhi featuring actor Randeep Hooda in the lead. A film on the same subject is being made by Karan Johar starring Akshay Kumar.

The director has also been reportedly roped in for helming a film for Aanand L Rai’s production house.
5/6

Ashutosh Gowariker

Director Ashutosh Gowariker is known to make films set on huge canvases. He is credited for helming some of the most iconic films in Bollywood that includes ‘Lagaan’, ‘Jodha Akbar’, ‘Swades’ and others.

After the debacle of his last venture ‘Mohenjo Daro’ starring Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde in 2016, the filmmaker is all set to take over the reins of direction for his next titled, ‘Panipat’, starring Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.

The director is also reportedly in talks for remaking the latest Marathi film ‘Aapla Manus’ starring Nana Patekar.
6/6

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

With an impeccable record of films like ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Delhi- 6’, ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and other to his credit, filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is one of the most rooted directors of Bollywood.

However, his last venture ‘Mirzya’ starring Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher in 2016 tanked at the box-office. While the filmmaker gears up for his next directorial venture, he is all ready with his next productional venture ‘Fanne Khan’ starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao which will be released this year.
