60th Britannia Filmfare Awards 2014: Best Film nominations

The stage is set and the Filmfare frenzy is at an all time high. Recognising the best talent in the industry, 60th Britannia Filmfare Awards 2014 is all set to roll out the red carpet and reward the performances that rendered us speechless in the year, 2014. Let's take a look at the films that are vying to win the 'Black Lady' this year.

2 States: Film adaptation of the popular Chetan Bhagat novel by the same name, 2 States managed to floor the critics as well as mint money at the ticket windows. Produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by Abhishek Varman, the film featured Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. A romantic-comedy, the film deals with the trial and tribulations that an Indian couple has to go through to get married, if they belong to different states. The chemistry between the film's lead pair helped the film garner attention and the chartbuster album kept the cash registers jingling.

Haider: The third and final film in Vishal Bharadwaj's trilogy of Shakespearean tragedies, Haider, opened to rave reviews. The film is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. Shahid Kapoor steals the show with a power-packed performance in the lead role. Besides his performance, Tabu's act as Haider's mother and Shraddha Kapoor's portrayal of Haider's love interest, are also noteworthy.

Mary Kom: The film was in discussion for a long time prior to its release. The biographical sports-drama was based on the life of 5-time female World Boxing Champion and Olympic bronze medalist, Mary Kom. Priyanka Chopra stepped into the shoes of the champion boxer with elan. Her portrayal fetched her many accolades. Produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and directed by Omung Kumar, the biopic was appreciated by the critics for its accuracy. The box-office figures of the film also seemed encouraging.

PK: Rajkumar Hirani's PK managed to surprise both the critics and the audience with its subject that dealt with religion. The film's content was deemed too controversial by certain sections of the society who demanded the film be banned across the nation. However, the controversy only seemed to have benefited the Aamir Khan-Anushka Sharma-starrer. PK smashed all previously created box-office records and is still going strong at the ticket windows. Aamir Khan's portrayal of an alien from another planet also fetched him acclaim.

Queen: Kangana Ranaut's Queen was a surprise hit. The film narrated the story of a girl dealing with her break-up by going alone on her honeymoon. While the story sounds simple enough, it was the execution that garnered accolades. Not only was the film appreciated by the critics, it was also cheered for by the audience who rooted for Rani throughout the film. Kangana's act as the bumbling simpleton from Rajouri Garden can easily be called her best till date. Produced by Phantom films and directed by Vikas Bahl, Queen, that was a Women's Day release worked well with the Indian audience.
