Is it the actor, the direction, songs or the hype around the movie? As we analyse the reasons behind Kick and Singham Returns' success, let us have a look at the recipe of box-office success. A look at the slides will reveal the five most important must-haves for a movie to be a part of the prestigious 100-crore club.

5 Things that make a 100 crore blockbuster

Khans: One of the first and foremost ingredient to make a 100 crore film is the cast. And if you cast Salman or Shah Rukh Khan, then there is a very high probability that the movie will do very well at the box-office. All the three Khans- Salman, SRK and Aamir are extremely popular among the masses as well as classes. Their movies are eagerly awaited by their fans. Their movies get 100 per cent opening and tickets are sold much in advance. In fact, Salman Khan is the only actor who has seven films in Rs 100 crore club in a row. Salman’s popularity is unmatched and his films, irrespective of the content or actress, do well at the box-office. Hence, most smart filmmakers like Rohit Shetty or Karan Johar go for bankable stars who have had a good record at the box-office. Hence, it is better to wait for the Khans if you want to earn moolah in crores.

Controversy: The recent success of Salman Khan-starrer Kick proves that controversies around a movie or lead actor during the release date helps in box-office business. Just days before Kick’s release, Salman had a row with photographers, where they refused to click the superstar. The whole controversy around Salman’s bouncers scuffling with photographers at an event and Salman not showing any remorse got lot of media attention. If that was not enough, there were rumours that Kick’s release date might get postponed due to the success of Marathi film Lai Bhaari. However, this is not the first time that controversies around movies have helped to garner good business at the box-office as they are used as promotion tactics. Even the whole clash between Shah Rukh-starrer Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardaar during Diwali helped the SRK movie to do well. Hence, be it a clash, rumours about affair between lead actors or copyright issues, controversies bring in good box-office business.

Item number: Be it Katrina Kaif’s Chikni Chameli or Kareena Kapoor’s Fevicol Se, a sizzling hot item number by a top actress helps to grab eyeballs. These item numbers become popular even before the movie releases and attract lot of publicity for the movie. The hotter the moves, the more views it will get on Youtube and more it will be discussed on social media platforms, thus helping movie to do well at the box-office. Earlier item numbers were considered vulgar and were only done by B-grade actresses. However, as they are becoming more and more popular, top actresses have also joined the bandwagon of item girls.

Marketing: It has become a habit for lead cast of movies to go to TV shows and city-to-city promotional tours before the release of their movies. This helps in promoting the movie among the masses. In fact, when it comes to film promotions and marketing, Shah Rukh Khan is unbeatable. He goes out of his way to promote his films. During the release of Chennai Express, SRK came with interesting marketing strategies. First he hiked the price of the ticket before the release of the film, then he came up with an interesting idea of giving one Chennai Express ticket free with every two tickets purchased in Delhi. If that was not enough, he recently planned worldwide shows with the cast of Happy New Year ahead of its release to generate curiosity among the audience. Be it press conference, contests, launch parties, releasing trailer online to appearing on reality shows; good marketing strategies and proper film promotions go a long way towards box-office success.

An average script with bizarre dialogues: Be it the Dabangg series or Kick, be it Grand Masti or Rowdy Rathore, there is something common in all these movies. Besides being a part of 100-crore club, these movies have an average script with some very bizarre dialogues. And if these dialogues are mouthed by a popular star like Salman Khan or Akshay Kumar, then the public does not give a damn if it makes sense or not. Moreover these dialogues become very popular and become the talking point in social media where they are thrashed and ridiculed. However, all this just helps the filmmakers in getting the right publicity for their movie.
