2014 Playlist: Chartbusters that rocked Bollywood

Bollywood is synonymous with the song-and-dance routine. A film is deemed incomplete without a song. Such is the obsession with Bollywood film music, that songs often make or break the film's fate at the box-office. However, not every film is fortunate enough to boast of a good album and yet others bank on their numbers to fetch them the numbers. Here's taking a look at songs that made it to our playlists this year.

'Aaj blue hai': This foot-thumping number from the film Yaariyan kick-started the year on a good note, literally. Featuring newcomers, the film seemed to be a wager of sorts. However, with lyrics that went 'Aaj blue hai...,' the Yo Yo Honey Singh number managed to find the film an audience. Stylishly shot, the song features bikini-clad girls lazing by the beach side. The film has another gem in the song 'Baarish.'

'Zehnaseeb': Sung by Shekhar Ravjiani and Chinmayi Sripaada, this Hasee Toh Phasee number can be termed as the love song of the year. A beautiful composition by Vishal-Shekhar, the song has meaningful lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The dreamy feel of the song extends itself to the video where Sidharth and Parineeti's characters dream up a romance. Hasee Toh Phasee's album is quite an impressive one what with songs like, 'Ishq bulava' and 'Manchala.'

'Tune maari entriyaan': The peppy number, 'Tune maari entriyaan' brought back the essence of the '90s in Bollywood. Unapologetically quirky, the song had all the makings of a chartbuster and indeed was one. The song by Neeti Mohan, Bappi Lahiri, Vishal Dadlani, Krishnakumar Kunnath also had a Bengali version that was equally popular. A staple at parties and pujas held throughout the year, the song garnered some much-needed attention for the YRF film. Shot against the backdrop of the chaotic Kolkata, 'Tune maari entriyaan' is a winner all the way!

'London thumakda': Featuring in one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially lauded film of the year, 'London thumakda' managed to become an anthem of celebration for Kangana's Rani in the film, Queen. The Punjabi number, not only opened the film on a high note, it also bound it together. Sung by Labh Janjua, Neha Kakkar, Sonu Kakkar, the song has become a favourite at wedding sangeets throughout the country.

'Baby doll': It doesn't take much to sell a film that features Sunny Leone. However, throw in a song like 'Baby doll' into the picture and you have a blockbuster! Ragini MMS 2 is one of the highest-grossers of the year and it wouldn't be wrong to say that the song, 'Baby doll' has a huge role to play in fetching the numbers. Shot in a rather provocative manner, the song has all the quirks to make it work. Sunny's sensuous act in the song too made it a hit with the audience.

'Suno na sangemarmar': Shot against the backdrop of the Taj Mahal, 'Suno na sangemarmar' can be played on a loop. Inspired by a Bengali song, the Youngistaan number is sung by Arijit Singh. The music for the song has been composed by Jeet Ganguly while Kausar Munir has provided the lyrics for this mellifluous number. Jackky Bhagnani and Neha Sharma's chemistry just adds to the overall appeal of the song.

'Palat': The song 'Tera dhyaan kidhar hai...tera hero idhar hai' from the film Main Tera Hero is as quirky as it gets. Featuring Varun Dhawan and Ileana D'Cruz, the song is a fun composition by Sajid-Wajid. With this song, Arijit Singh flaunts his ease with peppy numbers. Shot in an equally kitschy manner, the song adds to the comic-book appeal of the film.

'Mast magan': The song 'Mast magan' stands out from the rest of the songs in the 2 States album. The beautiful number stays with you for a long time after watching the film. Expansive shots of Chennai and Delhi make the song a visual treat to watch. The beautiful composition and lyrics add to its repeat value. This song's sure a major takeaway from the year.

'Muskurane ki wajah': The soulful Arijit Singh number, 'Muskurane ki wajah' features in the gritty film Citylights. The song is the only hope of sunshine in an otherwise dark film. In an industry where films don't sell unless its songs do, 'Muskurane ki wajah' became the film's USP and managed to increase footfalls. Citylights, that had some remarkable performances by the lead pair -Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha, has a lot to thank this song.

'Galiyaan': Ek Villain was lauded by the critics for the stellar performances by Riteish Deshmukh, Sidharth Malhotra and Shraddha Kapoor. However, the film's music also had a major role to play in fetching it the numbers at the box-office. The song, 'Galiyaan' especially takes the cake for being a haunting melody that strung the film together beautifully. Sung and composed by Ankit Tiwari, 'Galiyaan' surely deserves a spot on the playlist.

'Samjhawaan': Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania number 'Samjhawaan,' originally featured in the Punjabi film Virsa. Sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the song was adapted for the Bollywood number. The song has two versions in the film. While one is rendered by Arijit Singh in his melodious voice, the unplugged version is sung by Alia Bhatt. Perching pretty on a chair, Alia sings the song with elan.

'Tere bina kick': Featuring in one of the highest-grossers of the year, 'Tere bina kick...' was a major draw even before Kick's release. With Salman Khan shaking a leg with the gorgeous Jacqueline Fernandez, the song got all the attention it deserved for the sizzling chemistry. Needless to say, the Yo Yo Honey Singh composition is applause-worthy.

'Aata mazhi satakli': Yo Yo Honey Singh is rumoured to have had composed this song in 24 hours flat. The popularity of the number is unquestionable. Shot in a rather quirky style, the song is now synonymous with Rohit Shetty's Singham franchise. Featuring the singer and composer along with Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan and a group of children dressed as policemen, the song topped the charts when it released and is still a favourite at public dos.

'Abhi toh party shuru hui hai': The 'Abhi toh party shuru hui hai' number garnered some much needed attention for the Disney film, Khoobsurat. Written, sung and composed by Badshah, the video for the song is vibrant and full of life. An animated Sonam Kapoor and her antics with Badshah make this song fun. An ultimate party number, the song is sure to get the guests on the dance floor, this New Year's eve.

'Manwa laage': Trust Shah Rukh and Farah Khan to come up with a beautiful melody in an album of otherwise banal dance numbers. 'Manwa laage,' sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal makes it to the list for its mellifluousness. While a heist-comedy film like Happy New Year wouldn't have had the space to accommodate a romantic number, the makers squeezed in the song. To keep the comic quotient alive, the song worked out all the quirks and has its moments that will leave you in splits. Vishal-Shekhar's composition and Irshad Kamil's lyrics manage to transport you to a different dimension altogether.

2014 Playlist: Chartbusters that rocked Bollywood

'Chaar kadam': The song 'Chaar kadam' is perhaps the film PK's only indulgence. The song seems to have been used to string together Anushka and Sushant's character's romance and rightly so. Rendered by Shaan, the song is a treat both on the ears and also for the eyes. However brief, the song brings out all the elements of young love and conveys the urgency and ambitiousness of foolish lovers. Though it has come out in the second last week of the year, the song will surely be remembered for a long time.
