FOR THE LOVE OF POLO: Yasmin Kidwai (TOI Photo)
Yasmin Kidwai’s film on polo shows her fascination not just for the game but also the players who display inimitable grit, courage and determination.
Cinema in India is venturing into uncharted territory, and that includes sports besides cricket.
Yasmin Kidwai, an aspiring filmmaker, daughter of politician Imran Kidwai, has finally finished her documentary on polo.
We say finally because as she admits, “It took me four years to complete this movie.” But what made her make a movie on polo? Does she love the game that much?
“I have never been much interested in polo. My passion was for the men who played the sport,” she confesses candidly. “I think polo players are very different from other sportsmen, say those who play cricket or football. And that’s because of their passion for horses. Their passion, grit, courage and determination are the attributes that came to my mind when I decided to make a movie on them,” adds Yasmin.

Interestingly, her film is a 68-minute documentary, with real-life heroes from the polo circle. Ace polo players like Shamsher Ali, Basher Ali, Uday and Angad Kalan get to test their acting skills in it. “It was during the making of the movie that I met my husband Atul, who is also a polo player,” Yasmin lets on, shyly.
The documentary also features Maharani Gayatri Devi, Maharaja Bhawani Singh and Maharaja Jai Singh. Was it difficult to get them on camera?
Yasmin replies, “Not at all. In fact, when I spoke to Maharani Gayatri Devi, she loved the concept and immediately agreed to an interview. We have a two-minute clipping of hers in the movie.”
Yasmin has had to work quite hard on the film. “I have done a lot of research, because my effort was also to highlight what went into the making of one of India’s most sidelined sport,” says Yasmin.
