When Mumtaz opened up about her extra-marital affair and rejecting Shammi Kapoor's marriage proposal at 17: Nobody could hardly think we were in love
In the past, veteran actress Mumtaz had reflected on her personal life, revealing details about her extra-marital affair that occurred after discovering her husband, Mayur Madhvani's infidelity. Making her mark in Bollywood at just 11 years old with her debut in the 1958 film Sone Ki Chidiya, Mumtaz became a prominent star, particularly known for her hit films alongside Rajesh Khanna.
In an old interview with Pinkvilla, she had discussed her emotional journey following her husband's betrayal. Feeling lonely and hurt, Mumtaz shared, "Honestly, after the episode, I began feeling lonely. Main thodi rubabwali (headstrong) thi. I felt hurt. So, I flew down to India. When you’re amidst thorns and someone comes along with a rose, you do get carried away. But it was nothing serious. Just a temporary phase, which ended soon."
Mumtaz then appeared on Indian Idol 13 alongside veteran actor Dharmendra, where she reminisced about her late co-star Shammi Kapoor, who had boldly proposed to her when she was just 17. "Unhone straightforward kaha tha ‘I want to marry you.’ Mujhe shaadi nahi karna tha isliye shaadi nahi ki. (He straightforwardly said, 'I want to marry you.' I didn’t want to get married and so I didn’t)," she revealed, adding that she sometimes misses him.
Though their relationship was brief, Mumtaz expressed a sense of regret about not marrying Shammi. She noted that they amicably parted ways, emphasizing her desire to establish her career in acting at that time. In a previous interview with ETimes, she reflected, "Shammi Kapoor was really sweet and compassionate with me, Nobody could hardly think we were in love. Nobody thought I had turned him down for marriage since Shammi's financial standing was better; they questioned, How can Mumtaz deny Shammi?”
