When fame faded Mahima Chaudhry chose to fight not fall

Born as Ritu Chaudhry, she was renamed Mahima by director Subhash Ghai, who believed names starting with 'M' brought luck to his heroines. The change wasn’t just cosmetic — it was strategic. Ghai also created a carefully controlled launch for her debut in Pardes, ensuring a fresh image to rival rising stars of the era.

During the shooting of Dil Kya Kare in 1999, Mahima was involved in a near-fatal road accident. Glass from the shattered windscreen embedded itself in her face — 67 shards, as she later revealed. The physical trauma was followed by emotional pain when tabloids cruelly labeled her "scarface." She withdrew from public view for months, and credits co-star Ajay Devgn for shielding her on set during recovery.

Despite being Ghai’s protégée, Mahima later had a fallout with him. Rumors circulated about contractual restrictions, legal threats, and behind-the-scenes tension, which allegedly slowed down her career momentum. In a later interview, Mahima said she was “boycotted” from several big-banner films due to industry politics and power plays.

Mahima was in a long-term relationship with Leander Paes, only to discover he was cheating on her with Rhea Pillai. The betrayal deeply hurt her, but she ended the relationship and publicly called it a turning point in reclaiming her self-worth. She also faced speculation about a link-up with Ajay Devgn, which she consistently denied, saying it was “media-made gossip.”

In 2022, Mahima revealed she had battled breast cancer — a fight she kept private until she recovered. She credited her daughter, spirituality, and light-hearted shows like The Kapil Sharma Show for helping her stay mentally strong. Today, she is back in the spotlight with roles like The Signature, and uses her story to inspire cancer survivors and single mothers alike.
