When Bollywood depicted the environmental and social issues of Uttarakhand on screen

Over the years, whenever Bollywood has turned to Uttarakhand to shoot and set their films, the stories have almost always revolved around environmental or social issues from the region. Here is a look at a few such films.

2/5

Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978)

Although the Raj Kapoor-directorial was not explicitly set in Uttarakhand, it told the story of an engineer working on a dam in the region. The climax of the film showed the dam breaking and villages being swept away by the flood.

3/5

Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985)

The Mandakini and Rajiv Kapoor-starrer used the titular character – Ganga – to depict a parallel for the pollution the Ganges River faces as it flows down from Gangotri to the plains.

4/5

Kedarnath (2017)

Depicting the tale of a love story amid the 2013 floods that devastated the state, the Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan-starrer used real footage of the calamity in the film.

5/5

Batti Gul Meter Chalu (2018)

The film, which was shot mostly in Tehri, was centred on the issue of inflated electricity bills in the rural areas of Uttarakhand. It had the stars – Shahid Kapoor, Yami Gautam, and Shraddha Kapoor – learn the Garhwali dialect for their roles.
