A legendary life comes to an emotional end

Dharmendra, fondly known as the man with the golden heart and the He-Man of Bollywood, has left millions of fans devastated at the age of 89. November 24 will forever be remembered as the heartbreaking day the ‘Sholay’ icon passed away, just 13 days short of his 90th birthday. He fought a prolonged battle with age-related complications and breathlessness, during which his admirers prayed endlessly for his recovery. His passing marks the end of an era defined by warmth, humility, and unmatched cinematic charm. Over six decades, Dharmendra shaped Indian cinema in ways that remain unparalleled.

A journey that began in the 1960s

Dharmendra entered the film industry in 1960 with ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’, which did not perform well commercially. However, success soon arrived with the 1964 release of ‘Ayee Milan Ki Bela’. His true breakthrough came with OP Ralhan’s ‘Phool Aur Patthar’ in 1966, a film that transformed him into a bona fide star. Across a remarkable 64-year career, he featured in more than 300 films, showcasing versatility, charm, and extraordinary screen presence. His rise from humble beginnings to superstardom remains one of Bollywood’s most inspiring stories.

A treasure of iconic performances

Dharmendra’s filmography is filled with unforgettable performances that left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. From the action-packed brilliance of ‘Sholay’ to the emotional depth of ‘Satyakam’, he proved his range time and again. Films like ‘Phool Aur Patthar’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Haqeeqat’, ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’, ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’, and ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’ remain timeless classics that continue to delight audiences. His ability to effortlessly shift between romance, action, comedy, and drama made him one of the most beloved actors across generations. Few stars have achieved this level of cross-genre mastery.

Sixty years of unmatched contribution

Being active in films for over six decades, Dharmendra’s dedication and work ethic stood as a benchmark for the industry. He became a part of India's cultural fabric, influencing not just cinema but also inspiring countless actors who came after him. His longevity in a fickle industry is a testament to his talent, discipline, and deep connection with audiences. Even as times changed, Dharmendra remained relevant, respected, and deeply cherished. His presence onscreen radiated sincerity, making every role memorable.

5/5

A record no superstar has surpassed

According to DNA, Dharmendra holds a historic milestone that remains untouched even today; he starred in the highest number of successful films in Hindi cinema. Not Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Rajinikanth, nor Kamal Haasan have surpassed this extraordinary feat. His consistency, massive body of work, and audience appeal combined to create a record that stands unbreakable. Dharmendra’s career proves that true stardom isn’t just about hits—it’s about impact, versatility, and an enduring bond with the audience.
