The Golden 90s: Larger-than-life romance

The 1990s represented a very fruitful era for the romantic comedy. Movie such as 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun', and 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' set the contours for the love stories filled with humor, songs, and dramas revolving around family. These films glorified an idealistic notion of romance: love must conquer all, be it the opposition from family, cultural disparities, or unjustified slandering by way of gross misunderstandings. Usually, the comedy was through the side characters, but it was the off-the-world chemistry between the leads that defined this generation.

Urban 2000s: Love in the city

Just as urban India went global, so did Bollywood rom-coms. Films like 'Kal Ho Naa Ho', 'Hum Tum' and 'Salaam Namaste' ushered in new shades of modern relationships. Live-in and long-distance relationships and heartbreak were now part of the story, which was often treated with humor and charm. Here, dialogues turned humorous, characters weird, romance began to infuse slice-of-life in its storytelling.

The OTT Era: Realism meets romance

In recent years, romantic comedies have gravitated towards relatability and an acceptance of realism. Films such as 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan', 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar' as well as OTT hits like 'Mismatched' and 'Little Things' have brought to life complexities of modernity—stories of same-sex love, generational disputes, commitment issues and mental health. Comedy is no longer about the clumsiness of comic accidental falls, it is being derived from the awkwardness of daily life, sarcasm and relatable family debates.

Late 2000s–2010s: Quirk and experimentation

Bollywood rom-coms went for the jugular with films such as 'Jab We Met', 'Band Baaja Baaraat' and 'Wake Up Sid'. The love story was no longer a fairy tale, but a tale of self-discovery. Stronger female characters, non-traditional story lines, and the rise of the “quirky couple” took over. Directors such as Imtiaz Ali and Maneesh Sharma retooled the genre with relatable characters finding their way through urban chaos, career goals and messy emotions — all while preserving the frivolous protagonists enjoying their jammed-packed travail.

What’s next?

Bollywood rom-coms are no longer about one-size-fits-all love stories. They’ve evolved from grand family-oriented romances to nuanced tales that reflect India’s changing cultural fabric. With Gen Z audiences looking for authenticity, we can expect future rom-coms to blend humor with sharper social commentary, while still keeping the magic of love alive.
