Papi Gudia (1996)

Papi Gudia (1996) starred Karisma Kapoor, Avinash Wadhavan and child actor Master Raghu. The story centred on a cursed doll possessed by an executed criminal’s spirit, wreaking havoc within a household. Loosely adapted from Child’s Play, its performances brought intensity to the outlandish premise, making it an infamous entry in 1990s Hindi horror.

Mahakaal (1993)

Mahakaal (1993), helmed by the Ramsay Brothers, featured Archana Puran Singh, Kunika and Kiran Kumar. It introduced the terrifying villain Shakaal, who hunted victims in their dreams with demonic ferocity. Borrowing from global slasher traditions, the film still delivered local mysticism. Its memorable villain and supernatural tension made it a standout Ramsay creation.

100 Days (1991)

100 Days (1991), directed by Partho Ghosh, starred Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff and Javed Jaffrey. Blending horror and suspense, it followed a woman plagued by psychic visions that uncover a gruesome murder. A commercial and critical success, it showcased Madhuri’s versatility and became one of the most acclaimed thrillers of the decade.

Junoon (1992)

Junoon (1992), directed by Mahesh Bhatt, starred Rahul Roy and Pooja Bhatt in a supernatural revenge story. After being cursed, the protagonist transforms into a bloodthirsty tiger on every full moon. With its mix of folklore, romance and horror, the film’s unusual concept and strong performances made it a box office success.

Raat (1992)

Raat (1992), directed by Ram Gopal Varma, starred Revathi in a chilling performance as a woman possessed by a malevolent spirit. Known for its realism, atmospheric sound and absence of typical Bollywood songs, it became a pathbreaking psychological horror.
