Taapsee Pannu, Deepika Padukone and others: Bollywood celebs who have landed in trouble for 'allegedly' hurting religious sentiments

Bollywood celebs are no strangers to controversy. Whether it is their choice of clothes, a movie dialogue or even the food they consume, our tinsel town personalities are often 'accused' of hurting Indian sensibilities, in one way or the other. The latest celeb to join this list is Taapsee Pannu. The actor was recently spotted walking the ramp in a chic party dress, with a deep neck. The actor chose to don a Goddess Laxmi necklace with it, which did not go down well with the masses. As per the latest, Taapsee has now been slapped with a legal complaint and it now remains to be seen what steps the Pink actor will take to do damage control.

DP seems to be controversy's favourite child as earlier her movie Padmaavat landed in a huge soup, pushing back its release by more than a year. Recently, the actor came under fire for her song 'Besharam Rang' from the movie Pathaan, where she was spotted wearing a saffron coloured bikini. Inspite of huge brouhaha claiming that her attire is hurting religious sentiments, the song was retained with minor edits and the movie went on to become a huge blockbuster.

Aamir Khan's movie PK, directed by Rajkumar Hirani was about an alien who lands on our planet and starts questioning religious fanaticism and blind faith of people. However, even with the right intention, the movie came under fire with accusations that it was mocking Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Despite that, the movie garnered immense critical acclaim and audience love, going on to become one of the biggest blockbusters of 2014.

Akshay Kumar's horror comedy drama Laxmii was earlier called Laxmii Bomb. The movie, based on the spirit of a transgender woman also starred Kiara Advani. However, owing to severe backlash regarding the original name, that people thought insulted the Goddess Laxmi, the same was changed to just Laxmii. The movie was delayed owing to the pandemic, eventually becoming the first big Bollywood movie to release on OTT in 2020. However, the flick did not perform well and was severely panned from all quarters.

The superstar, who is otherwise loved by the masses, came under fire for his movie Zero in 2018. In the trailer of the same, SRK was seen in a vest and shorts, with a garland of Rs 500 notes around his neck and a ‘kirpan’ (curved, single-edged blade, holy to the Sikhs) tied diagonally across his body. A petition was filed in the Bombay High Court, seeking action against SRK was hurting Sikh sensibilities. Even though the makers insisted that the dagger was merely an ornamental one, the scene was eventually altered with the help of VFX.
