Swanand Kirkire reacts to the issue of missing credits in the industry: 'If you have worked for me...'

Indian lyricist, playback singer, and actor Swanand Kirkire recently took to social media to call out the digital music platform for failing to give him proper credit for one of his songs from the 2011 Marathi film 'Deool'.

During his conversation with Hindustan Times, Swanand Kirkire clarified that the issue wasn't actually the fault of the digital music platform but rather the music label. He explained that the music platform simply picked up what the music label provided, so they weren't to blame at the core. His point was not to criticize the platform for failing to credit him but rather to emphasize that there should be a system in place for verifying such information.

The singer revealed that the issue was resolved within two hours, with the platform giving him credit. He added that speaking out in the public domain helped address the matter. The platform contacted the music label to correct the mistake and kept him informed throughout their communication. He also shared that they have since appointed a fact-checking agency to prevent such issues in the future.

Swanand pointed out that the issue of missing credits in the industry is often not intentional, stating that, at times, it can simply be due to clerical errors. However, he emphasized that this remains a concern affecting all artists. He remarked that while there may not be a final resolution, the focus should be on respect, with the approach being, "If someone has worked for you, they deserve credit."

For the unversed, Swanand is well-known for his lyrics for the 2005 film 'Parineeta', for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Lyrics. He has since written songs for numerous popular films, including 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai', '3 Idiots', 'Kai Po Che!', and others.
