Riya Sen’s royal lineage and film family

Riya Sen, born Riya Dev Varma, comes from an influential royal lineage connected to the kingdoms of Tripura and Cooch Behar. Her father Bharat Dev Varma belongs to the Tripura royal family, making her the grandniece of Maharani Gayatri Devi. Coming from a celebrated film family—including mother Moon Moon Sen and grandmother Suchitra Sen—Riya also grew up alongside her sister, actress Raima Sen.

Early acting journey and Bollywood breakthrough

Riya began acting at the age of five, first appearing onscreen as her mother’s daughter. She later featured as a child artist in ‘Vishkanya’ (1991). Her popularity surged after starring in Falguni Pathak’s iconic music video ‘Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi’. She eventually made her Bollywood debut with ‘Style’, a low-budget entertainer that turned into a massive success and established her as a promising young star.

3/5

Success with ‘Style’ and ‘Jhankaar Beats’

Following the success of ‘Style’, Riya again impressed audiences with her performance in ‘Jhankaar Beats’, another moderately budgeted film that became a sleeper hit. She appeared to be on a strong upward trajectory in Bollywood, securing a place in ensemble comedies and commercial entertainers. However, her flourishing career faced an unexpected setback soon after.

4/5

The scandal that impacted her career

According to DNA, in 2005, a private video involving Riya and her then-boyfriend Ashmit Patel surfaced online and became a widely discussed scandal. Although both initially denied its authenticity, the controversy overshadowed her growing success. Despite appearing in commercially successful films like ‘Apna Sapna Money Money’ and ‘Qayamat’, the scandal affected her Bollywood prospects, and she gradually moved away from Hindi cinema.

5/5

Regional film comeback and OTT presence

Post-scandal, Riya found new opportunities in Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and English films. She achieved major acclaim with the Malayalam hit ‘Ananthabhadram’ (2005), directed by Santosh Sivan. Over time, she transitioned to OTT platforms, appearing in series like ‘Bekaaboo’, ‘Ragini MMS: Returns’, ‘Mismatch 2’, ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh’, and ‘Call Me Bae’. In 2017, she married longtime friend Shivam Tewari, stepping into a more private life beyond Bollywood.
