'Sanju', 'Darr', 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge': 6 superhit films rejected by Aamir Khan in his career

Aamir Khan is rightly known as the 'Mr Perfectionist' in Bollywood. The superstar, who has very successfully created a niche for himself in Bollywood, takes his time to pick a script, work on his character to the T and then release his films. He has some iconic movies like, 'Lagaan', 'Sarfarosh', 'Raja Hindustani', 'Rang De Basanti', '3 Idiots', 'Taare Zameen Par' and Dangal amongst others. However, did you know that he has also rejected many movies that went on to become blockbusters at the box office? Yes, you read that right! From 'Sanju', 'Darr', 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', here's taking a look at movies rejected by Aamir Khan.

'Darr'

Shah Rukh Khan's role in 'Darr' is one of the most iconic characters we have in Bollywood. It is difficult to imagine anybody else portraying the role of the obsessive lover played by King Khan. However, did you know that the role was first offered to Ajay Devgn and then Aamir Khan before it came to SRK? Yes! Actors back then took up roles that gave 'main character' energy and were not very keen on doing negative roles. Shah Rukh not only took up the challenge but also aced it like a pro!

'Sanju'

Aamir Khan shares a good rapport with director Rajkumar Hirani. The actor-director duo has worked in films like, '3 Idiots' and 'PK' before. In 'Sanju', however, Hirani roped in Ranbir Kapoor as the lead. Aamir was also offered a role in the movie. In an interaction with the media, Aamir said, “He (Hirani) approached me with the script and I loved it. He wanted to play Dutt saab’s role. It is a fantastic role and the story is largely based on the father-son relationship. But Sanju’s role is unbelievable. So as an actor, I told Raju that Sanjay Dutt’s role is so wonderful that it won my heart. So in this film I can’t do any other role but Sanjay Dutt’s, which of course I cannot do because Ranbir (Kapoor) is playing it. So, do not offer me anything.”

'2.0'

Everyone who saw Rajinikanth's 'Robot' waited eagerly for '2.0'. However, not many know that Aamir was approached to play Rajinikanth's role in '2.0'. In an interview with a new sportal, Aamir revealed that Shankar offered him 2.0. The atcor added that even Rajinikanth called him up to request him to do the film. Although he is a huge fan of both Shankar and Rajinikanth, he did not take up the role. According to him, whenever he shut his eyes, he saw Rajinikanth in that role. So he told Shankar, he won’t be able to do it as Rajinikanth is irreplaceable.

'Hum Aapke Hain Koun'

Sooraj Barjatya's 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun' is one of the iconic and most loved films we have in Bollywood. The film starred Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the lead roles. Not many know that the character of Salman was first offered to Aamir Khan. However, Mr Perfectionist apparently didn't find the script very appealing so he passed on the offer. The role then went to Salman and became one of his most popular films.

'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'

The popularity and love that Aditya Chopra's 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' has got is unmatched to date. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in lead roles. The movie was reportedly first offered by Yash Raj Films to Aamir Khan. However, the actor decided not to go ahead with the role. His film, 'Rangeela' with Urmila Matondkar also released the same year. 'DDLJ is the movie that changed the definition of romantic movies in Bollywood.

'Swades'

After working with Ashutosh Gowariker in 'Lagaan', Aamir Khan was offered a role in 'Swades'. However, the actor passed on the offer as he reportedly found the script 'very boring'. The film was about a successful Indian scientist who returns to his village to take his grandmother to America with him and in the process rediscovers his roots.
