Films that failed at first but became cult classics over time

In Bollywood, a film’s fate at the box office does not always reflect its long-term impact. Several movies that opened to poor or average collections eventually found a loyal audience over time. Through repeat television screenings, music popularity and growing word of mouth, these films slowly built a strong fan following. Today, many of them are celebrated as cult classics despite their initial commercial failure.

‘Andaz Apna Apna’

Released in 1994, ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ featured Aamir Khan and Salman Khan alongside Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor in a madcap comedy directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Despite its poor box office performance, the film’s quirky humour, unforgettable characters like Crime Master Gogo and iconic dialogues later made it a cult comedy classic.

3/6

‘Dhol’

The 2007 film ‘Dhol’, directed by Priyadarshan, starred Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kemmu, Tusshar Kapoor and Rajpal Yadav in lead roles. This comedy revolves around four lazy friends chasing easy money but landing in trouble instead. Though it underperformed in theatres, its humour and performances gained popularity later through television reruns and internet culture.

‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’

‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’, a romantic drama directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, starred R. Madhavan, Dia Mirza and Saif Ali Khan. The film did not create much impact during its theatrical release in 2001. However, its soulful music and heartfelt love story helped it gain immense popularity among younger audiences over the years.

‘Deewane Huye Paagal’

Directed by Vikram Bhatt, ‘Deewane Huye Paagal’ brought together an ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Shahid Kapoor, Rimi Sen, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal. This action-comedy, filled with confusion and comic chaos, failed to impress at the box office initially but later developed a loyal fanbase for its entertaining moments and performances.

6/6

‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’

‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’, directed by Dibakar Banerjee, featured Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Ranvir Shorey and Parvin Dabas in a slice-of-life comedy. The film revolves around a middle-class family’s struggle to reclaim their land from a corrupt builder. Though it started slow, its relatable story and humour eventually turned it into a beloved cult classic.
