Rani Mukerji completes 30 years: Lesser-known facts about Bollywood’s fierce performer

Rani Mukerji remains one of Bollywood’s most versatile powerhouses. Born into a cinematic lineage, she didn’t rely solely on her surname. Instead, she built a legacy through grit, fearless choices, and an unmistakable raspy voice. From her classical Odissi roots to her historic National Award win, Rani’s three-decade journey reflects relentless dedication and a remarkable evolution as an artist.

2/7

The design dream

Before stepping into acting, Rani had entirely different ambitions. After completing her Home Science degree, she aspired to become a jewellery or interior designer. However, the steep course fee of Rs 3 lakh became a roadblock. This financial hurdle altered her path and eventually led her towards films, where she discovered her true calling.

3/7

The Odissi artist

Rani is a trained Odissi dancer, a foundation that deeply influences her screen presence. She began training in Class 10 and spent nearly a decade mastering the classical form under Guru Ravindra Atibudhi. This discipline honed her grace, control, and expressive facial movements, which continue to add depth to her performances.

4/7

The family connection

Rani comes from a deep-rooted film family. Her father, Ram Mukerji, co-founded Filmalaya Studios, while her mother was a singer. She is also the cousin of filmmaker Ayan Mukerji. Despite her background, Rani carved her own path, stepping out of her family’s shadow to become a global name through sheer talent and persistence.

5/7

The Bengali debut

Contrary to popular belief, Rani’s first appearance was not in Bollywood. She made her acting debut in her father’s Bengali film Biyer Phool (1996), starring opposite Prosenjit Chatterjee. The modest beginning laid the groundwork for her successful transition into Hindi cinema soon after.

6/7

The national milestone

Three decades into her career, Rani achieved a major milestone by winning the Best Actress award at the 71st National Film Awards in 2025. Her powerful portrayal in Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway earned her long-overdue national recognition, reaffirming her commitment to meaningful and impactful storytelling.

7/7

The global documentary

Rani also explored unconventional storytelling by associating with the international documentary Gambling, Gods and LSD. The experimental project examined spirituality and human consciousness across cultures. Her involvement highlighted her interest in intellectually driven narratives, proving she has always valued substance over mere stardom.
