The team of Made In China was recently in the city to promote their upcoming film. Since the film is based on the concept of jugaad, the film’s team shared how they’ve often used jugaad to get their way. Delhi boy Rajkummar Rao revealed that he had learnt a few jugaad ideas while travelling in Delhi buses. “Delhi mein bahut jugaad lagaye hain maine. I mastered the art of reaching from point A to point B in a crowded DTC bus through jugaad. Sometimes, I used to take those private buses to my college (Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College) and if you told them that you’re ARSD’s staff then ticket nahi leni padhti thi. I tried using that trick but I couldn’t do it,” said Rajkummar. The actor and his co-star Mouni Roy also revealed that DU students would often use tricks to enter other colleges during fest time. Rajkummar said, “A lot of DU students would try to get fake IDs and befriend the guards but since I was a part of the theatre society, I didn’t have to do anything like that. Aise hi entry mil jaati thi.” Adding to this, Mouni quipped, “Main toh Miranda House se thi, so we would just stand at the gate with five girls and flaunt our ID cards.”

Talking about his character, Rajkummar said, “I am playing a Gujarati businessman. I had no reference to any Gujarati person in my life, so getting familiar with the culture and mannerisms was slightly difficult. But I can relate to this character. Raghu (his character in the film) is very aspirational and does not have a plan B. He has seen rejections and failures, but doesn’t give up easily. I find these traits very relatable if I look back at my journey. Apart from that, we are very different people.”

While the trailer might suggest that the film is a comedy, the cast insists that the characters aren’t trying to be funny, instead, they’re very ordinary. “The characters aren’t funny but the situations are,” said Rajkummar at the event in Delhi. Boman added, “It’s like

the film had comic elements, but my character was very dark. Similarly in this film, my character, Dr Vardhi, is not meant to be funny, instead, he is a very shaant, very calm, very giving kind of person. I am playing a sexologist. He is a doctor who solves the problems of the bedroom and would like to be treated like any other doctor.” Mouni, who plays a Gujarati housewife in the film, said that it wasn’t easy to get a hang of her character. “I am playing a Gujarati woman who has always lived in Mumbai, so I was not required to speak in Gujarati but normal Hindi. So, that was easy but I had to work on my mannerisms. I also had a mini-workshop for the same,” shared Mouni.
