More than Mahesh Babu’s wife: The silent power of Namrata Shirodkar

Namrata didn’t step into the limelight by accident — she belonged to a family steeped in cinema. Her grandmother, Meenakshi Shirodkar, broke ground in 1938 by wearing a swimsuit on screen in a Marathi film, a move considered scandalous at the time. Her sister, Shilpa Shirodkar, also made her mark in Bollywood, making Namrata the third generation in a lineage of bold and screen-savvy women.

Before entering films, Namrata was a crowned beauty queen — winning Miss India in 1993 and placing high in both Miss Universe and Miss Asia Pacific that same year. Though she was set to debut in a big-budget Bollywood film alongside Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty, the project was shelved, causing her actual film debut to come much later than expected.

While she didn’t chase stardom like others from her pageant circle, Namrata carved out a strong portfolio with impactful supporting roles in films like Vaastav, Kachche Dhaage, and Pukar. Her performance in Pukar earned critical praise, and she even featured in the international crossover film Bride & Prejudice, which brought her visibility overseas.

Namrata’s romantic life remained largely private, though she was briefly engaged to a businessman in the late '90s. She was also rumored to have dated a married filmmaker during the peak of her Bollywood run. Eventually, she met Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu on the sets of Vamsi. Their five-year relationship led to marriage in 2005, defying age-gap stereotypes, as Namrata is older than Mahesh by a few years.

After her wedding, Namrata chose to leave acting and focus on her family life — a move influenced partly by her husband’s preference for a quieter domestic setup. Far from fading away, she became an integral part of Mahesh Babu’s career management, overseeing branding decisions, endorsements, and philanthropic work. From being on camera to calling the shots behind the scenes — Namrata reinvented her role entirely.
