Our pick of the trailer this month is Omung Kumar’s Mary Kom, a biopic on world boxing champion Mary Kom, played by Priyanka Chopra in the film.
The first look of the film itself left the audience awestruck, making it that much more challenging for the trailer to work. But it did and what made the trailer special for us was how it virtually captured the life of a Manipur farmer’s daughter, who goes on to becoming a world champion showing her anger and struggles on the way.
1x1 polls
Right from the first shot, which showed Mary Kom falling after getting punched, the trailer had us hooked right till the end. Her story shows you how nothing is impossible. When her husband says to her, ‘Tum ek fighter hai, aur fighter kabhi haar nahi manta,’ it gives you gooseflesh. Excerpts from our conversation with the filmmaker and lead actress on why they believe the trailer works:
Omung Kumar: First we were overwhelmed with the response to the first look in the Bombay Times that had surprised everyone. The trailer touched people and many people called to tell me that they cried after seeing it. The most touching response for me was from a lady from the North East, who had somehow found out my mobile number and called to say how seeing the trailer, she felt so proud and felt grateful for what it was attempting to do for women, sports and most importantly, people from the North East.

Priyanka Chopra: I was in shock after the first look of the poster itself. I remember we were shooting in Turkey and I tweeted it and went back to shooting. By the time I came back, my phone was flooded with smses and over 3,500 twitter messages loving it. I thought my phone would explode. I cried and called Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir and Omung and Sanjay sir was like, ‘Pagal ho gaye hain sab log dekh ke poster.’ The nicest response I got post the trailer was when Mary called me and said, ‘My kids saw you and thought it is me.’ For me, if I could convince a mother’s children despite not looking like her, it made me proud. My Gunday team saw it and called me ‘Raging Bulbul.’ But when Farhan said, ‘Mary ko Milkha ka salaam,’ I was thrilled.
