Manoj Patil, Shama Sikander, Owen Wilson: Celebs who survived suicide attempts

Over the weekend, the film industry was rattled once again after it almost lost another young talent, former Mr India Manoj Patil, who attempted to take his life by suicide. Whether it was dealing with mental health issues or battling substance abuse, several stars have come forward to share stories of their struggles that drove them to attempt the extreme step. Here's a list of celebrities who survived suicide attempts.

Manoj Patil

Former Mr India Manoj Patil survived a suicide attempt last week. Officials said that Patil had tried to end his life by swallowing some pills at his home in Oshiwara, but was rushed to hospital by his family and survived. While he is currently undergoing treatment, the Mumbai Police has booked actor Sahil Khan and four others for allegedly instigating Patil to take his life.

Mina

Kwon Mina, a former member of the K-Pop group AOA, made headlines after she attempted to end her life last month. According to reports, the troubled singer attempted suicide at her home, but was discovered by an acquaintance and rushed to hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. News of her suicide attempt came just hours after she posted a lengthy apology to her fans for a series of controversies that she was embroiled in.

Demi Lovato

American singer-actress Demi Lovato has made no secret about her long battle with drug addiction, depression, and suicidal thoughts. The star opened up about battling her demons in her documentaries, ‘Demi Lovato: Stay Strong’ and 'Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil'. The actress revealed that her suicide attempts started at the age of seven. Following her near-fatal overdose in 2018, she revealed that she had suffered three strokes, a heart attack, and had just five to ten minutes to live before she was revived. Since then, the star has been doing her bit to advocate the cause of mental health and reach out to those going through similar quiet battles.

Shama Sikander

Shama Sikander, in an interview with TOI, revealed that she had tried to end her life. Opening up about her troubled past, she shared that she tried to take her life by overdosing on sleeping pills after her struggles with bipolar disorder got the better of her. Her advocacy on mental health and coming to terms with her suicidal attempts came at a time where various Indian actors were opening up about their mental health issues and trying to normalise the discussion around them.

Owen Wilson

In August 2007, 'Loki' star Owen Wilson was found with his wrists slit in his Santa Monica home by his brother. The actor was rushed to the hospital and given the necessary treatment. Following the news break, speculations were rife that his reported drug use, and alleged depression over his personal life, led to the actor taking the drastic step. The incident led to Wilson bowing out of the Hollywood film 'Tropic Thunder' that then went to Matthew McConaughey.

7/8

Halle Berry

Halle Berry, one of the first women of colour to take home an Oscar, confessed back in 2007 that she had attempted suicide after her first marriage (to David Justice) failed. In an interview, the 'X-Men' actress said she tried to end her life by carbon monoxide poisoning, but decided not to when she thought of her mother finding her body in the car.

8/8

Ozzy Osbourne

Rocker Ozzy Osbourne has been fighting his fair share of demons--be it drugs, alcohol, and even sex addiction. However, unlike the others on this list, the star reportedly attempted to take his life “just to see what it felt like." His family, on the other hand, have also had their own battles with mental health. His wife Sharon has made no secret about her battle with depression and how she made three attempts to take her life over the years. Their son, Jack Osbourne also attempted to take his life by consuming a cocktail of prescription pills and cutting his hands. He, however, survived and woke up twelve hours later.
