Actor
Malti Chahar has weighed in on the ongoing Rs 370 biryani controversy involving comedian Pranit More's crowd-work clip, expressing disappointment over the mindset reflected in the viral exchange. The actor, who shared a close friendship with More during their time on 'Bigg Boss 19', took to social media to voice her concerns about consent, respect, and the treatment of women.
The controversy erupted after a clip from Pranit More's stand-up show went viral online. During the interaction, an audience member claimed that because he had spent Rs 370 on a plate of chicken biryani during a date, he expected something in return from the woman. The remark triggered widespread criticism, with many social media users condemning the statement and the reaction it received during the show. Joining the conversation, Malti shared a strongly worded post questioning the attitudes reflected in such comments.
Linking the debate to broader social issues
In her post on X(formerly Twitter), Malti also referred to the criticism surrounding Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor's film 'Peddi', which has faced scrutiny from some viewers over the portrayal of its female lead.
Drawing parallels between the two debates, she wrote: “Rs 370 biryani and Peddi… make you realize why many women are hesitant about marriage, why we value our independence, and why we choose to split the bill. Some women are even financially supporting men entirely.” The actor argued that despite changing times, women continue to face objectification and outdated expectations.
Speaking about consent and respect
Malti further highlighted the importance of understanding consent and treating women with dignity. “Yet, we continue to be objectified, and a woman's consent is apparently worth no more than a plate of biryani. After generations of fighting for equality, dignity, and respect, it's disheartening that we're still confronting the same underlying mindset.”
Her comments quickly gained attention online, with many users echoing her concerns about the messages normalised through entertainment and social interactions.
A message for parents and audiences from Malti Chahar
The actor also urged mothers and future parents to actively teach boys about boundaries and respect. “To all mothers and future mothers: please teach your sons to respect women and understand the importance of consent. And to the audience - it's easy to dismiss something as 'just a joke' or 'just a film,' but media shapes culture, and women often face the real-life consequences of what gets normalized on screen.”
Malti stressed that audiences also play a role in deciding what kind of content receives support and attention.
“People make money by catering to the market, but as consumers, we also have a responsibility. Please be mindful of what you choose to support and encourage. Thank you.”
Malti and Pranit More had earlier made headlines during their stint on 'Bigg Boss 19'. Their close bond inside the house led to speculation about a possible romance, forcing Malti to publicly clarify that they were only friends. As the season progressed, however, their equation reportedly changed, and the friendship eventually deteriorated.
Pranit More faces mounting criticism
While the controversial remark was made by audience member Himanshu Jangra, Pranit has also faced criticism for laughing during the interaction and later uploading the clip online. Responding to the backlash, the comedian issued a public apology, acknowledging that he should have intervened. “I’ve seen the criticism regarding a recent crowdwork clip. The comments made by the audience member do not reflect my views. Looking back, I should have challenged the remark instead of laughing and moving on.”
Meanwhile, Himanshu also apologised following the outrage and subsequently deleted his social media accounts. Reports further stated that Starvik Design, where he was employed, terminated his services after the controversy escalated, adding another chapter to a debate that continues to spark conversations about consent, accountability and the influence of public content.
