NEW DELHI: Directors Mahesh Bhatt and Deepa Mehta are planning to make a feature film on the historic saga of a journey by 376 Indians from India to Vancouver and back on a ship named "Komagata Maru" during the freedom struggle.
This was conveyed to Tarlochan Singh, Vice Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities during his recent trip to the US, a statement released by Singh here on Tuesday said.
He said the film will highlight the role of Indian patriots who gave their lives during the freedom struggle 85 years ago.
In the August of 1899 Baba Gurdit Singh, a leader of the Babbar Akali Movement hired a Japanese ship but on being denied entry by the Canadian Government was forced to return to Calcutta.
After that, the history is full of heart wrenching accounts of the brutality of the British soldiers when they attacked the ship.
According to the statement, 90 per cent of the passengers were Sikhs and their fight against British imperialism and racial prejudice "will inspire future generations to trust human dignity".
