Lata Mangeshkar's four siblings: All you need to know

Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday, February 6 at age 92. Known to millions as the "nightingale of India" and a regular fixture of the country's airwaves for decades, Lata was the eldest of the other Mangeshkar siblings - sisters Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, and brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Here is all you need to know about the talented siblings and their achievements in the music industry.

2/5

Meena Khadikar

Meena Khadikar is said to be the 'least-known' Mangeshkar sister. While she has kept a much lower profile than her two sisters, she made a name for herself by working as a playback singer and composer. Her work in Hindi cinema includes the songs 'Duniya Mein Hum Aaye Hain Toh' from 'Mother India' that she sang with sisters Lata and Usha, 'Phagun Aaya' from 'Pilpili Saheb', the duet 'Aapne Chheen Liya Dil' with Mohammed Rafi, among many others. She is also best known for composing music for the Marathi industry, including a popular kids’ song 'Asawa Sunder Chocolatecha Bangle', which was later recorded in Bengali and Gujarati.

3/5

Asha Bhosle

Asha Bhosle, also one of the country's legendary playback singers, has a career spanning over eight decades. While the tabloids told many tales of friction between the talented sisters, Asha and Lata collaborated for over 50 duets, including popular songs like 'Main Chali Main Chali' from 'Padosan', 'Mann Kyon Behka Re' from 'Utsav' and 'Band ho Mutthi To Laakh Ki' from 'Dharam-Veer'. She was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan Award for her contribution to music. Apart from her booming career in the Hindi film and music industries, she also sang tracks in over 20 Indian languages. She was married to the renowned music composer Rahul Dev Burman best known by his stage name RD Burman.

4/5

Usha Mangeshkar

Usha Mangeshkar came into the spotlight as a playback singer after crooning devotional tunes for a 1975 film 'Jai Santoshi Maa' which became a blockbuster. In her career spanning decades, she has recorded songs in Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Nepali, Bhojpuri, Gujarati and Assamese. She is also a three-time Filmfare Award nominee. She was nominated in the Best Playback Singer category for 'Main to Aarti', 'Mangta Hai To Aaja' and 'Humse Nazar To Milao'. She also produced the musical drama 'Phoolwanti' for Doordarshan and 'Jait Re Jait' that won the President's Silver Medal for Best Feature Film in Marathi at the National Film Awards.

5/5

Hridaynath Mangeshkar

Hridaynath Mangeshkar is the youngest of the Mangeshkar siblings. The Padma Shri awardee has composed songs and scored for films like 'Lekin', 'Maya Memsaab', 'Lal Salaam', Yash Chopra's 'Mashaal' and 'Chaani', to name a few. He is also the first Indian composer to compose two entire albums featuring the poems and songs of the poet-saint Meera, titled 'Chala Vahi Des'. His most recent works include an album titled 'Meera Soor Kabeera' and produced an album with Lata titled 'Ghalib'. He also composed many tunes for Asha Bhosle in their careers.
