Karan Johar will soon be completing 25 years in the business as a director and the success of his films is proof of how much he knows the pulse of his audience. But there’s this one film of his which has left the audience divided till date as it dealt with infidelity, and that is Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna which has an ensemble cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta.
In his autobiography An Unsuitable Boy, Karan recalled the mood on set, and revealed that only Abhishek Bachchan had no questions or doubts. He elaborates that both Preity and Rani had a lot of concerns with their roles. While Preity wanted to understand why her husband doesn't love her any more, Rani was asking for a scene that would justify her actions.
Karan also wrote about this incident where even Shah Rukh Khan, who doesn't usually need more than two takes, struggled to get a single line in a scene and he screamed out, ‘What is this nonsense!’
Even the actor of the millennium Amitabh Bachchan had doubts about his role of Sexy Sam and when he asked Karan about it, he would say, 'Amit uncle, I am casting you as a slightly overtly sexual older man,' and Mr Bachchan’s reply was, 'You’ve come to the right person.'
In fact Karan didn’t even pay heed to Aditya Chopra’s suggestions for the ending and went ahead with his guts even though many told him that he has lost his marbles. But in the end, the film was a box office hit.
