Karan Johar on ‘Dhurandhar’ politics: 'I wasn't offended' as film hits Rs 1,300 cr milestone'

Ranveer Singh's film ‘Dhurandhar’ has been in theaters for over 40 days. It has earned Rs 1328 crore worldwide and is still making money. The movie is a big hit at the box office, but some people did not like its politics and found it too divisive. Hrithik Roshan said he did not fully agree with the film's politics. Karan Johar, who praised the film before, said he has no problem with its politics.

In a chat shared on the YouTube channel of IIMUN, Karan was questioned about his take on Dhurandhar’s politics. He responded, “I unabashedly, unapologetically, and absolutely outstandingly loved Dhurandhar. I saw all of it with awe because I loved the craft of filmmaking. I loved the storytelling. I loved the way he divided it into chapters. I loved that the gaze was more internal and it wasn’t against; it was for speaking about politics in its own way.”

Speaking about his own political take on the film, he said, “I actually wasn’t offended by the politics of the film. I know where it was heading. I know some people could agree or disagree, and that should be cinema. I was not offended by any ideological issue in the film. I watched it for the craft, for the cinema aspect of it, and I absolutely loved it, and I felt like Aditya Dhar has a unique voice, and I feel he has emerged as a strong, unique voice. I walked out feeling it was a nuanced film.”

‘Dhurandhar’ craft admiration

Karan pointed out that, just like Sandeep Reddy Vanga's films, the filmmaker's fresh perspective pulled him in, and he couldn't overlook the top-notch quality shown. Watching it made him wonder if he could create anything similar, but he soon saw that although he's skilled in many ways, this particular style isn't his preference. “The craft of Dhurandhar is what I went home with, and of course, the immensely powerful performances,” he said.
