January box office roundup

After several clash of titans in 2019, the first month of the new decade has started with a bang as Ajay Devgn's 'Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior' hit the bull's eye. With cinemagoers witnessing two epic clashes, January has turned out to be quite an interesting month at the box office.

Varun Dhawan-Shraddha Kapoor's 'Street Dancer 3D' has done a decent business while Deepika Padukone's 'Chhapaak' and Kangana Ranaut's sport drama 'Panga' fail to impress. So here we bring a compilation of how the films released in January have fared at the box office.

2/5

'Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior' (Rs 231.65 crore)

Ajay Devgn's 'Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior' which released along with Deepika Padukone's 'Chhapaak' has been on a juggernaut run since day one. The film has gone on to earn Rs 231.65 crore from its three weeks at the box office and as per the latest report, it'll be giving tough competition to Saif Ali Khan's 'Jawaani Jaaneman' in the domestic circuit. What's more interesting is that the film which also stars Kajol has been doing exceptionally well in Maharashtra and creating several records as well. The film is based on the life of the Maratha Empire's military leader Tanaji Malusare and also features Neha Sharma and Sharad Kelkar in supporting characters.

3/5

'Street Dancer 3D' (Rs 52.50 crore)

Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor have teamed up once again after the phenomenal success of 'ABCD 2'. The duo is joined by Nora Fatehi and other skilled dancers, who can be seen flaunting their scintillating dance moves in 'Street Dancer 3D'. The dance flick which released along with Kangana's 'Panga' has gone on to mint Rs 52.50 crore from its first week. The Remo D' Souza directorial which opened on a good note in the domestic circuit saw a massive drop in its collections as it entered the week but still managed to remain steady through the week.

4/5

'Chhapaak' (Rs 31.97 crore)

Deepika Padukone's 'Chhapaak' which had been the talk of the town since its inception failed to impress the audience as it went on to collect just Rs 31.97 crore in the domestic circuit. The Meghna Gulzar directorial was based on the acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal and was mired into several controveries right before its release. The film which released alongside Ajay's 'Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior' is reported to have failed due to Deepika's visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and showing solidarity with the students out there during the protests.

5/5

'Panga' (Rs 16.50 crore)

Kangana Ranaut collaborated with ace filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari for the first time for a sports drama titled as 'Panga'. The film which had grabbed everyone's attention prior to its release failed to allure the audience to the theatres. With a total collection of Rs 16.50 crore from its first week itself, the sports drama has turned out to be one of the biggest disappointment of January. Apart from Kangana, the film also stars Jassie Gill, Richa Chadda and Neena Gupta in pivotal roles.
