Indian cinema should have more women producers, says Priti Rathi Gupta

Her film ‘Karwaan’ is up for release
Today, women are making a mark in all aspects of cinema. Be it editing, direction or even cinematography, Indian cinema can boast of women achievers in all departments. Having said that, their presence is still less when compared to their male counterparts, especially in fields like direction and production.

Producer Priti Rathi Gupta would agree. Ahead of the release of her next film, ‘

Karwaan

’, she spoke to a daily about the need for more women producers. She observed that while things are changing, and India is seeing an increasing number of women who are good at finances, the country still has a long way to go. A Harvard alumnus, who has over three decades’ experience in investments and trading, she admits that her expertise in the field of finance has helped her as a producer.

Interestingly, while Priti made her debut as a producer with ‘Waiting’ (2016), starring Naseeruddin Shah and Kalki Koechlin, ‘Karwaan’ was meant to be her first as a producer. So, why did she have to keep ‘Waiting’ for ‘Karwaan’? Priti told the daily that though she faced many obstacles, she held onto the script of ‘Karwaan’, as she wanted it to get a good platform. With the trailer and songs from the movie getting appreciated already, we are sure Priti’s long wait will be worth it.

‘Karwaan’, directed by Akarsh Khurana, features

Irrfan

, Dulquer Salmaan and Milthila Palkar.
